Neben den Forschungsarbeiten soll durch das Institut, das drei Stiftungslehrstühle umfasst, das Lehrangebot der Bochumer Universität um einen neuen Studiengang im Bereich der Werkstoffsimulation erweitert werden.

Einer der bisher größten Vorteile muss, wie ich meine, das beeindruckende, von Vielfalt geprägte KollegInnennetzwerk sein. Es gab auch einige augenöffnende „Aha-Erlebnisse“ im Unterricht – und zwar nicht unbedingt dort, wo ich es erwartet hätte. Ein Beispiel ist die Lehrveranstaltung „Managerial Accounting“ von Prof. Charlie Caliendo, in der wir bei einer „Simulation“ mit unseren Übungsfirmen in Gruppen gegeneinander antraten. Dabei habe ich anschaulich erlebt, wie schnell an und für sich rentable Unternehmen Schiffbruch erleiden können; mir war immer klar, wie wichtig der Cashflow ist, beim Durchlaufen der Unternehmensfunktionen im Rahmen der Simulation spürte ich das aber sozusagen am eigenen Leib, sodass es mir jetzt noch bewusster ist.

I think the diverse and impressive peer network has to be one of the biggest benefits so far. There were also a number of times where my eyes have been opened by an “aha moment” and they weren’t necessarily in the courses that I would have expected. One example was in Professor Charlie Caliendo’s Managerial Accounting course where he ran a “simulation” and we had our own model companies with which we competed against each other in teams. I vividly saw how perfectly profitable businesses can so easily go bankrupt; I always knew cash flow was important but running through the business functions of the simulation really helped drive this home in a more heartfelt way for me.

In order to predict the sound level distribution generated from the system in the room, a free-field simulation was calculated with the simulation software EASE 4.2, now extended to allow for the direct calculation of the individual speaker filter through a WFS operator. This calculation was performed on the basis of the loudspeaker directivity pattern (see Figure: Balloon-Representation), determined by a measurement in an anechoic half-room and for the individually configured equalization of the loudspeaker modules for six local spatial areas. The simulations of the the sound fields show a good compliance between the primary (virtual sound sources) and the secondary sources (LS-array).

Im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojektes am VIRTUAL VEHICLE wurde, gemeinsam mit der AVL List GmbH und der Porsche AG, eine Erweiterung mit der Bezeichnung ACoRTA (Advanced Co-Simulation for Real-Time Applications) entwickelt, um eine rein virtuelle Analyse eines Gesamtsystems um Echtzeitanwendungen zu erweitern (Echtzeit-Co-Simulation). Mit dieser Erweiterung ist es nun möglich, reale Hardware-Komponenten in die Gesamtsystemsimulation zu integrieren. Dabei wird jedoch nicht das entworfene Simulationsmodell speziell für den Einsatz am Echtzeitsystem konvertiert (etwa Codegenerierung), sondern weiterhin im individuellen Simulationsprogramm gerechnet.  Die Ein- und Ausgänge werden in Echtzeit mit dem Echtzeitsystem ausgetauscht, d.h. die Architektur des Gesamtsystems bleibt bestehen.

As part of a research project conducted at the VIRTUAL VEHICLE, an extension named ACoRTA (Advanced Co-Simulation for Real-Time Applications) was developed jointly with AVL List GmbH and Porsche AG, to supplement a purely virtual analysis of the overall system with real-time applications (real-time co-simulation). The extension enables the integration of physical hardware components into the whole system simulation without special treatment of the underlying simulation model. Inputs and Outputs are switched over in real time so that the architecture of the whole system remains intact.

Model evaluation and improvement: Reliable simulations of future climate change are possible only if the representation of clouds in the model is improved. A focus of the research group is on the statistical description of clouds which are not resolved by the model grid (“subgrid-scale variability”). The evaluation of this statistical description with satellite data, ground-based remote sensing and high-resolved model simulations allowed for an improvement of the formulation. Comparisons of simulated clouds with new satellite data further revealed issues with cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds. New approaches for parameterizations, implemented in collaboration with ETH Zurich and the Dutch weather service, helped to improve the agreement of the simulation with observations.

Further workstations for experiments with power-semiconductors and their corresponding circuits are set up as well. For the measurement of the different electrical properties, the laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment (CROs, Power Analyzers, Multimeters etc.). Besides the normal workstations, the laboratory also has access to its very own workshop which is equipped with multiple work spaces for jobs like soldering, drilling, etc.
