In this context the main aim of the proposed project was the exploration and provision of benchmark indicators of atmospheric climate change for the UTLS region by using available RO based climatologies and, for exploring the long-term value, “proxy” RO climatologies from re-analyses and climate model runs. Given the limited length of the available RO data (continuous since 2002 only), re-analyses were used to extend the observational datasets back to 1979. Furthermore, Global Climate Model (GCM) scenario simulations for the IPCC 4th Assessment Report (AR4) were used as multi-decadal “proxy” datasets out to year 2050. The datasets were systematically explored for finding the most robust and sensitive RO based change indicators both by testing pre-defined potentially useful indicators within a multi-model/multi-ensemble approach and by using a new visualization-driven 4D field exploration technique. Based on the identified most promising indicators, the trend detection capabilities of RO observations were investigated using methods of optimal trend detection (“fingerprinting”).

First the structure of the simulation data is described independent of a possible visualization and of the physical data format. This includes explicitely stored data, such as particle attributes or electrical field values, as well as implicitely available data, such as time and the position of grid points. Different diagrams can be created by assigning individual data fields to the axes and attributes of a visualization. The following visualizations were implemented: Scatter plots can display any three dimensional attribute space by mapping arbitrary data fields to the three axes. Line plots can be used to, for example, visualize the pathlines of particles, trajectories of any kind and function plots. Scalar field visualization using iso-surfaces and vector field visualizations using hedgehogs or streamlines are supported as well.

Jets launched from active galactic nuclei are understood to be an integral part of the build-up and evolution of massive galaxies in the early Universe. Simulations suggest that the star formation in these galaxies may be strongly affected by the central black hole through jet activity ("jet feedback"). We aim to derive observable signatures from large simulations in attempt to confirm this scenario. You will work on the newly available high-resolution simulation data, learn about the analysis and visualization of large-scale 3D data sets, examine the heating and cooling processes in the interstellar medium and compute synthetic emission maps ("images") in different spectral lines. These maps can be compared with existing or future observations and allow a critical review of this scenario. This software environment provides software for automatic operation of complex simulation and analysis pipelines. (2) We will build up the final data archive for all of Planck data, and an archive of simulated data before that in order to test the archive concepts, access mechanisms and so on. (3) We are responsible for developing and operating the Planck simulation pipeline, which is important because these synthetic data can be used by data analysts to check and calibrate their analysis algorithms.

Furthermore, the central sub-project provides the integration of field, laboratory, and simulation data from all sub-projects to the interdisciplinary information system Turtle. This information system allows the junction of the bottomup and top-down approaches of the research unit using methods for the transformation between different time and space scales. All stored information will be semantically classified (meta data) to ensure a long time utilization, also after the end of the project. The purpose of the central sub-project is to provide a platform for a modern information mining to allow a process and scenario identification based on the combination of different events, states and processes. The central sub-project will develop general software modules for the coupling of the different models based on technologies such as XML-RPC and OpenMI.

Our simulations show that a defined hydrogen-bond network develops on the surfaces of the proteins elastin and collagen upon cooling. Specifically, there is an increasing fraction of water molecules, which participate in exactly four hydrogen bonds. Simultaneously, the amplitudes of the protein dynamics decrease and the mechanism for the water dynamics changes from rotational diffusion to rotational jumps, which involve large angles. These observations demonstrate not only the interaction between local structure and local dynamics, but also the interplay between protein and water in the connective tissue.

The methods used in the hydraulic modelling and for modelling the waterway systems with multi-dimensional mathematical models warrant a structured, information-assisted work process where the necessary observation and simulation data are obtained, processed, managed and evaluated without discontinuity of media. The evaluation of field study measurements and model data aims in particular to extract the key information from what is often a very large quantity of data by means of characteristics analysis. These characteristics permit the comparison and classification of the status of the waterway systems and can also be used for predicting probable future developments. The method base developed in the BAW is supplemented by research and development projects and extended with reference to new specific issues. At the moment for example, work is in progress to include methods for ship handling simulation.

The newly developed and optimiZed FE simulation model not only facilitates the input of simulation data, but also and more importantly reduces computing time by up to 60 %. Comparative analyses were carried out to examine the suitability of simplified two-dimensional computing models for simulating individual processes and to verify their accuracy using three-dimensional calculations. This makes it possible to further reduce simulation times for some applications and to carry out parameter studies in a faster and more cost-effective way.
