Two of the three projects submitted in the current call, an excellence cluster on simulation technology (SimTech) and a graduate school on intelligent production and manufacturing methods (Advanced Manufacturing Engineering) have cleared the final, decisive hurdle in the current selection round of the Excellence Initiative, organised by the German federal and state governments for the promotion of top-level research. The announcement to this effect was made today by a commission consisting of members of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Science Council. In total, 35 German universities submitted proposals for 40 excellence clusters, 44 graduate schools and eight institutional strategies.

On June 17, 2011, the Rheinmetall AG signed a contract to build up a modern army training center in Mulino – located in the Volga Military District – to be completed in 2014. The arms company is cooperating with the Russian company JSCo Oboronservis. Up to 30,000 Russian soldiers are supposed to be trained there every year, using advanced simulation technology. The Russian soldiers will be trained for ground combat with laser duel simulators and will learn to use highly modern communication technology. More training centers are planned for three other regions.

Simulation technology has developed into an extremely effective consulting tool for digital hospital planning at UNITY. In the beginning, surgery areas were planned and optimized through surgery simulation projects. Due to great success, other hospital areas were also increasingly optimized through simulation technology such as emergency rooms, outpatient care, and sterile services. By using this technology, future models of hospitals can be created in order to assess the previously outlined questions in different scenarios and to make the right decisions early on. The simulation technology provides a significant contribution to shortening the planning times of newly constructed hospitals or expansions, and to select the best possible alternatives to realize these plans. Thus, the number of operations that were performed increased by 1,900 cases with the same amount of personnel; patient changing time was reduced by 66%, thereby reducing empty beds by more than 50%. The result was a six-digit surplus in profit.
