Water is a highly versatile natural element, which mainly illustrates the alpine world. Here water and mountains form a symbiosis and manifest an eternal cycle. Basically amorphous,... more

„Unsere Schule kann sich die Hardware-Ausstattung nicht leisten.“ Sein Sitznachbar, der elfjährige Max, nickt und sagt: „Ich habe keine Ahnung vom Programmieren, bin aber total neugierig.“ Ein Stuhl weiter richtet sich Ben-David, 13 Jahre alt, auf: Er hat schon ein paar Sachen am PC ausprobiert, denn sein Vater „macht im Job was mit Medien“ und legt Wert auf die digitale Bildung seines Sohnes.
“Do you already know how to write a program?”, asks Ben Brunzel. “Nope”, answers Finn, who is 14 years old. “Our school can’t afford the hardware we need”. His companion who is sitting next to him, eleven-year-old Max, nods and says: “I have no idea about programming, but I really want to find out.” One chair further along, Ben-David, thirteen, sits up and says that he has already tried out a couple of things at the PC because his father “has something to do with the media” and thinks his son should develop digital skills.

I am telling you: 5 hours of riding a bus are the worst. Even more, when the air conditioning is so cold, that it desiccate your nose mucosal, so that you have to sit in the bus, covering your mouth and nose with your scarf, to get some humidity in your nose. My seat-neighbor must have thought I am a lunatic or have a contagious disease. At least he looked at me that way.

The eleven-year Fabrizio greeted us in Spanish, which is one of the four languages he speaks. English, German and Italian come in to play. He is a student at the International School Ruhr. His classmate dominates Norwegian, English, German and is now learning Spanish. This is the foreign language, that students at IS Ruhr can learn. English is the language spoken at the International school Ruhr but of course also German is taught. Students who do not speak German, learn German as a foreign language intensively there, "so that they can be integrated as soon as possible," states Daniela Rose, Admission Manager of IS Ruhr.

It all happened very fast. One minute the person in the seat beside me was completely relaxed, the next minute he was seizing up, he rolled his eyes, clamped his jaw and swallowed his tongue. He could have suffocated. Luckily for him, I was sitting right next to him on this flight from Frankfurt to Mallorca and immediately recognized his symptoms as those of an epileptic fit. I loosened his jaw and tilted his head and neck back so that he could breathe, thus saving his life. I have been a member of the Doctor on Board program since 2009 and in that time have helped quite a few passengers. One of them was a toddler with a very high fever. Why? It was just a relatively harmless case of flu. A Paracetamol suppository from the doctor’s kit soon did the trick. On two occasions, I also had a flight attendant call me over to a diabetic suffering from low blood sugar, who was almost unconscious. In both cases, they had made a mistake with their insulin injections because they had forgotten to factor in the time change. I gave each of them an injection of glucagon to raise their glucose levels and 20 minutes later, they felt fine again.

The private minority schools of DIWAN, founded in 1977 as a reaction against monolingual language policy in France, were modelled on Canadian immersion schools, which first appeared in 1965 in Ontario, as well as on Ikostalas (Basque country) and Welsh language schools (Wales) (Kuter 1999). The network of DIWAN immersion schools, which has expanded over the years, has created a linguistic regime, ideologically founded in language revitalization. The regime guarantees a secure Breton-only space in schools, along with the teaching of two foreign languages (English and German or Spanish) and classes in the students’ mother tongue French. Nowadays this quite secure Breton-only space definitely is in opposition to a globalized and flexible world. In this context, the research work questions the following: „How do the pupils experience their multilingualism?“ – hypothesizing that the students encounter separated multilingualism.

/ Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York Foto: Achim Kukulies Der wohl bekannteste Pop-Art-Künstler ist Andy Warhol (*1928 in Pittsburgh, PA †1987 in New York City, NY), der in seiner zwischenmenschlichen Kommunikation durchaus eigenwillig war, wie Dr. Wolfgang Kühn anlässlich einer Feier bei dem Galeristen Hans Mayer als dessen Sitznachbar selbst erfahren konnte.

Arguably the most well-known Pop artist is Andy Warhol (b. 1928 in Pittsburgh, PA, d. 1987 in New York City, NY), who was thoroughly idiosyncratic in his interpersonal communication, as Dr. Wolfgang Kühn was able to discover for himself when he was once seated next to Warhol on the occasion of a celebration at Hans Mayer’s gallery. Part of the unusual life of the extremely successful artist and graphic designer Andy Warhol was his friendship with Joseph Beuys, a Lower Rhinelander who was cut from a completely different cloth and whom Warhol admired as a great and serious artist.

Portraits are one of Warhol’s preferred subjects. In addition to numerous self-portraits, there are also portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Frederick the Great and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in the typical Pop art style. Popular individuals are produced as “Images” of their times according to photographs. In his portraits of Joseph Beuys, which appear in quad serial view or, as here, in full-frame, Warhol manipulates the photo as template material by ennobling the surface with diamond dust in order to augment the charisma of the celebrated German artist.
