I was aware of imbalance in the world between those who have a lot, and many of those who barely have for survival, and I knew that is not what God wanted, and I was to make a choice whether I will serve to richness that does not provide permanent happiness or to God who wants to guide my life?

WD When the first edition came out, people really had a struggle to get the message. They hadn’t heard anything like this before. But since then, things seem to be turning around. We’re aware now that some of the ideas that we had as a society were in the wrong direction. But now you see parents encouraging kids to get involved in volunteer work. There are much higher academic standards in education. Politicians, educators and parents are now using the phrases “high standards” and “high expectations.” Even in the area of discipline, there’s much less tolerance for dishonesty or for kids being cruel toward one another.

Although the first kilometres took them through the Black Forest, the famous gateau was nowhere to be seen. The riders were far too focused on the hunt. The hunt for kilometres, that is. The lowest common denominator of the group was clear from the outset: ride, ride, ride. This enabled everyone to quickly get to know and trust one another. The varied route was more than picturesque and offered a great deal of fascinating shadow play: into the curve, into the light, out of the curve, out of the light. Kilometre after kilometre. Some participants were already calling it the best trip of their lives after the first pit stop.

This is a mask to demonstrate the essence of realism in art. Owing to a birth-defect, Rory was born without the ability to control the muscles in his face. An emotionally deluged child, he found that screaming was never expressive enough and learned to sew masks to reflect his feelings. As he grew older, there were always problems with the realism in his masks. He didn’t have much of a knack for reproducing human anatomy, but what tormented him was the texture: he couldn’t imitate the exact look and feel of real human skin. Lacking the social skills to apprentice under a professional, he instead slaughtered his family and constructed new faces out of their torn husks.

Having volunteered for the German Red Cross in 1914, Erich Heckel became a member of a platoon assembled by the Berlin art historian Walter Kaesbach, enabling him to seek the company of fellow artists throughout the war. He thus made the acquaintance of Max Beckmann and in Ostend, where he was stationed for almost the entire war, of the Belgian artist James Ensor. Heckel spent every free minute of his time working on his paintings and drawings – which depict sick or wounded soldiers, soldiers bathing naked, the threatening landscape of war, and in general the sombre atmosphere of those times. “He aims straight for the physiological, the human element,” noted Heckel’s comrade-in-arms Anton Kerschbaumer. “He is a Gothic artist.” Perhaps this attitude helped him to keep his sanity – Heckel did not see war in terms of conquest and victory but of suffering and misery, which he sought to alleviate through his art. In 1915, the year in which he created this “Toter Soldat” (Dead Soldier), he painted the striking “Madonna of Ostend” – on sewn-together pieces of tent canvas – for the German sailors’ Christmas celebrations in the town. “How I loved painting that picture for the sailors,” he wrote in a letter home. “It is very beautiful to see how much respect and even love people have for things artistic. And who would have thought that my creations, which seem so incomprehensibly modern to the critics and cosmopolitans scrutinising them in decadent exhibitions, would be appreciated by those to whom they have been given as a present.”

I started playing the piano when I was 5 years old. My family supported my enthusiasm about music but they never rushed me into it. Jacques Offenbach is a paternal relative of mine, but at the time I didn’t even have a clue who he was. When I was 14 I went to a musical grammar school and was at the same already a young piano and trumpet student at the renowned Folkwang Hochschule (University of the Arts) in Essen. I really was a good pianist and trumpet player, but I already was secretly fascinated by the conductor profession. I visited every concert I could and so the desire to study conducting grew steadily. A youth concert by the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra at the time included Charles Ives' The Unanswered Question - this wonderful small piece in which the trumpet from afar repeatedly asks the question about the meaning of life. I was 16 and played the trumpet solo part. That is when I met the concert’s conductor, who then became my first conducting teacher...

: Graft was an incredible place. It is managed by three people so I learned what it meant to have an exchange with partners, especially during heated phases of a project. In moments like that it is just like a football team during a game. People are screaming at each other from all sides, and the result has to be completed in 90 minutes. All this aggression obviously is not meant in a mean way, but rather serves to push something forward. During this intense phase, there is definitely pain and suffering. But in each bubble there is a certain acceptance for brutality, as respect always rules.

[…] And that was how the following day she took me to Novodevichy cemetery. Its landscaped sidewalks were covered with snow. We wandered between tombstones and I couldn’t resist my old habit of delivering my monologues to her, this time on the important men and women who are buried there about whom I knew a thing or two. She listened to me with attention and her gaze was turning ironic. We arrived at Khruschev’s grave. Then Mei-Ling opened her mouth to tell me that the former USSR President is not buried at the Kremlin because he died while out of power. Then, for the first time since I knew her, she directed more than a hundred words in a row at me. I learned that Khruschev’s mausoleum is by Ernst Neizvestny, a sculptor Khruschev had ordered brought before him when he was the CPSU’s First Secretary, in order to violently berate him for producing art contrary to socialism’s ideals. And that the then young artist, instead of being frightened, shouted back to him that even if he was Comrade First Secretary he didn’t know anything about sculpture. Apparently, after he fell from power, Khruschev and the sculptor initiated a certain friendship, so much so, that in his last will and testament Khruschev stated that he wanted Neizvstny to sculpt the monument at his grave. On either side of the old leader’s realistic face there are two big abstract angular figures, one in white marble and the other in black. According to Mei-Ling they symbolize two ears.
