The "Bodensee Finanzforum" (Lake Constance Finance Forum) was an important impulse for putting in place the economic structure of the new laboratory. "What we already have in place is some financing. Immediately after our first discussion at the Finance Forum, we decided to go for the three f's - friends, fools and family," said Dr. Sabine Lautenschläger who, together with Schaarschmidt, is trying to purchase the equipment required to set up the laboratory as cheaply as possible, by using second-hand equipment or gifts. "We are doing everything we can to avoid bank loans and try to finance the whole thing ourselves," said Dr. Daniel Schaarschmidt explaining the founders' strategy.

LEDs will only win out on the mass market if LED lamps are affordable for every consumer. Nevertheless, when IKEA decided to switch to LEDs, they still cost around ten times as much as conventional light bulbs. Despite this, the decision-makers were undeterred. To be able to offer premium-quality LEDs without, however, compromising on price, they have opted for mass production: “Because we made a clear commitment to our suppliers regarding this new technology and assured them of a high sales volume of up to 7 million LED lamps per year, they have been able to make sizeable investments in research and development”, explains Caisa Sjöstrand, Information Manager in IKEA’s Lighting Business Area in Sweden. This gave a boost to manufacturing technology, with IKEA LEDs now produced in four highly automated factories in China and Europe. And they have never been such good value for money: a 10-watt, 600-lumen LED lamp – which essentially equates to a 60-watt bulb – already costs less than ten Swiss francs. Numerous tests have proved that, despite this low price, the quality is unimpaired, with IKEA’s LEDs easily beating off competing products that cost nearly three times as much.
