The Nelder system trail is a part of the Energy landscape Welzow-Süd and is purposed to analyses how variable plant densities, hence the space available for an individual tree, influence growth of single trees and the coppice as a whole. The species black locust and poplar (Hybride 275) were used. The plant density for the nearby Energiewald Welzow-Süd lies around 10000 plants/ha, following preliminary plans. However it is questionable if this plant density is the optimum for sustainable high yields.

The study focuses on the period between 1985 and 2005. The willingness of companies to provide apprenticeship training is a heavily discussed topic at a time where there are few apprenticeships available. Against this background, the project aims to describe how the involvement of Swiss companies in apprenticeship training has changed and to explain the reasons for this. The data gathered from the FSO’s Federal Business Census of 1985, 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2005 are used for this purpose. These include the question of how many apprentices are employed by the company. The existing information contained in the Federal Business Census data regarding company characteristics such as company size, sector and region are supplemented by information from other data sources regarding demographic developments in the cohorts of young people, the proportion that have completed the Swiss Academic Baccalaureate (Maturitätszeugnis), regional educational provision and economy. In this way, the project is intended to examine whether economic and structural influences may explain the changes in the training activities of host companies or whether a trend in the willingness of companies to provide apprenticeship training can be seen which cannot be explained by the data.

Roe deer browsing differentially affects the performance of broadleaved tree species in temperate forests, leading in most cases to a decrease in tree species diversity already in the regeneration stage. However, why certain tree species are preferred by deer and others avoided is poorly understood. I want to examine whether browsing intensity of single tree species depends on tree species composition, i.e. species identity and species diversity, in the sapling stage. Also, deer browsing has rarely been related to plant functional traits yet, so I want to find out whether avoided species are simply better defended, either mechanically or chemically, or whether there even is induced defense in saplings in response to deer browsing. With my study I want to contribute to a better understanding of changes in tree species diversity in view of high deer populations.

The Independent Commission on Migration met for the first time on September 12, 2000. It has been commissioned by the Federal Minister of the Interior, Otto Schily (SPD), to develop specific recommendations for future immigration policy. In particular, it has been asked to examine the statutory measures that may be needed in order to manage or restrict immigration and how future immigration policy should be categorized, both in the planned overall European immigration concept, and in the planned European asylum system. Furthermore, how can immigration and integration be coordinated; what should be seen as the most sensible concept of an integration policy? The task of the Commission is to analyse the necessary administrative and organizational measures necessary for reaching this target. In particular, it should be made clear whether or not the Federal Office for the Recognition of Foreign Refugees is to be given a broader range of tasks, and within what institutional framework and according to what criteria a need for immigration can be determined. The immigration policies and laws of other states should be studied for their contributions to this debate. The Federal Ministry of the Interior also wishes to reduce the duration of asylum proceedings and to decide whether the immigration regulations for ethnic German immigrants should be retained, ended or modified. The Commission, which will be divided into three work groups (asylum and refugees; need for immigration; integration), will conclude by announcing whether it considers a complete review of immigration law necessary for the implementation of its recommendations, or whether targeted amendments to the present law appear sufficient. Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) is in favor of regulating immigration to Germany beyond party lines. The deputy CDU/CSU parliamentary coalition head, Wolfgang Bosbach, presumes that it will not be possible to reach a consensus as long as the basic right to asylum remains untouched.

For in as much as immanence implies one’s own involvement in the phenomena under criticism, it initially calls into question the distanced viewpoint as a precondition for criticism. Against current claims as to the impossibility or invalidity of criticism under conditions of dissolution, our research project assumes that the concept of criticism should not be abandoned, but its procedures and forms of judgement should be redefined. An examination is accordingly made of the ways through which art asserts its right to criticism and the new forms of criticism this gives rise to. We proceed from three issues that have a central significance to present-day art production and which each determine the research field of a sub-project: a) the irreducibility of mediality, b) the discourse of modernism and c) the institutional context. In these areas we look into the ways through which art tests its ability to criticise and thus establishes its relationship to society.
