Nicht nur die Mafia-Bosse wurden festgenommen und verurteilt, ihre Güter beschlagnahmt und ihre Ländereien an soziale Organisationen übergeben, sondern die gesamte italienische Gesellschaft hat Anti-Körper gegen die Mafia-Krankheit entwickelt. ... In diesen 20 Jahren hat sich die entscheidende Überzeugung durchgesetzt, dass die Mafia nicht nur ein Problem Süditaliens ist. Sie ist ein Problem ganz Italiens, und zwar nicht nur, weil die Mafia auch im Norden tätig ist, sondern weil es in unser Bewusstsein gedrungen ist, das der Kampf gegen die Mafia ein gemeinsamer ist, der sowohl geografische Grenzen als auch die der politischen Zugehörigkeit überschreitet."

Italy marked the 20th anniversary of the murder of anti-Mafia judge Giovanni Falcone with numerous ceremonies on Wednesday. Speaking in the Sicilian city of Palermo, Prime Minister Mario Monti said that the whole country must take part in the fight against the Mafia. A call that is no longer falling on deaf ears, the liberal-conservative daily Corriere della Sera observes hopefully: "Something has happened in the past 20 years. Not only have Mafia bosses been arrested and sentenced, their assets confiscated and their land transferred to social organisations, Italian society as a whole has developed antibodies against the Mafia disease. … In these past 20 years the conviction has crystallised that the Mafia is not merely a problem in southern Italy. It is a problem for all Italy, not just because the Mafia is active in northern Italy too, but because we have realised that the fight against the Mafia is a joint battle that transcends geographic borders and political affiliations."
