A fashion label that is as feminine as it is luxurious, the premium German fashion brand Laurèl has recently moved into its new showroom at its headquarters in Munich. The relocation into the new, generously proportioned spaces ultimately also takes account of the growing significance of Munich as a modern metropolis and ordering location for national and international customers. At the same time, the new showroom not only represents a change of location, but is also part of the ongoing enhancement of the brand.

The space reacts flexibly to the individual orientation of guided tours targeting diverse visitor groups. Clincher is the maximum spatial flexibility: the exhibition modules can be rolled out of the hall, so that the approximately 800 square meters can be used for events with several hundred participants. Concise floor graphics remain as a footprint. They not only serve for guidance but also as part of the striking scenographic outline, giving visitors an intuitive orientation and connecting all exhibition and meeting rooms - from the foyer to the test parcours in the outdoor area.

What does MACBA do in this context? Due to the complexity of Raval,  there are no obvious or easy ways to approach the neighborhood. What the museum can do is critically reflect on the conditions of art and culture today and keep open a space of debate. We do that. Some of our public programs and debates are precisely based on the critical understanding of the present confluence of financial capital, real state activity and culture. We are also developing projects with specific communities in the neighborhood. For example, groups working with street prostitutes in order to get legal recognition (here it is important to keep in mind the long history of Raval as Barcelona's red light district, the Barrio Chino), or working with NGOs which are active with homeless children and teenagers in order to develop activities with them. In any case it is always a matter of developing specific projects with specific groups and for specific purposes. Not all of these projects are visible or easily translatable. This is of course not limited to the neighborhood, but is a part of a larger context of thinking and practicing ways concerning how the museum can contribute to the reconstruction of a radically democratic public sphere and thus play a central role in the life of the city. What is important is to understand that we work locally in order to deal with global problems and conditions.

The car race in Le Mans provides the setting and the occasion for the ‚Audi Tower’ project. The tower exemplifies the company’s motto ‚Vorsprung durch Technik’ and stands for the brand values of Audi. The 24 hour duration of the race is made visible by different day and night effects and impressions. The ‚Audi Tower’ is situated at the southern rim of the Audi Campus and thus defines the perimeter of the public space. The tower is made up of a continuous surface which expands from the base to its peak. The base not only constitutes the point of support but is part of the overall design geometry and marks the origin of its dynamic development. The tower emerges out of the surface of the piazza. Its geometry is inclined and folded until it reaches verticality in a 13 m tower. All surfaces of the tower are reflective – varying degrees of reflection of the mirrored-glass give the impression of dissolving materiality as the tower unites with the sky. The reflective steel base is an accessible platform which attracts visitors and enables a direct contact with the monument, the ACO - the race’s host, Audi and the winners of the 24-hour car race. The names of all winners are applied to the glass panels of the lower part of the tower. The diversity of functions is enhanced by different media elements which carry the information content of the tower. A projection surface is embedded in the front surface above the base which shows different media feeds and movies. The chronology of the 24-hour race is experienced by circumferential light rings which are lit hourly from bottom to top (other lighting configurations are equally possible). The Audi logo as well as the ‚24-heures-du-Mans’ logo are mounted at the top of the tower. The ACO logo is positioned on the surface of the base.
