A dancing rhinoceros, paper figures that glide across a puppet stage, the music of Mozart, animated charcoal drawings, and documentary film footage-William Kentridge's Black Box / Chambre Noire uses a fanciful, refined aesthetic to investigate historical trauma. The multimedia installation, comprised of animated film, objects, drawings, and a mechanical miniature theater, addresses the 1904 Herero massacre, in which German troops nearly wiped out the tribe in German Southwest Africa, today's Namibia; many historians consider it the first genocide of the 20th century.

Alexandra Ilyinichna Osten-Saken, nee Tolstaya (1797-1841) – eldest daughter of Count Ilya Tolstoy and Pelageya Gorchakova, Leo Tolstoy’s aunt, his father’s sister. As a young girl she had success in the society; she was fond of music and was quite a good harp-player. From 1837, after the death of her brother Nikolai, Alexandra was a guardian of his 5 children (Leo Tolstoy and his brothers and sister). In 1814 Alexandra married Count N.I. Osten-Saken; it was an unhappy marriage – her husband turned out to be insane, he tried to kill his wife twice, and a year after the wedding she left him and returned to her parents. She became very religious and almost ascetic. She died at Optina Pustyn (a famous monastery near Kaluga) on August 30, 1841 and was buried at the cemetery there. On the tomb-stone there was a poem written by Leo Tolstoy (who was then 13 years old). In 1929 the tomb-stone was brought to the Tolstoy family cemetery in Kochaki; in 2007 it was taken back to Optina Pustyn.

The year 2017 will mark the 75th anniversary of the massacre of Lidice that was committed by the National Socialists. In commemoration of this incident the two previous Lidice exhibitions »Hommage à Lidice« (1967) and »Pro Lidice« (1997) will be continued by a third project »Remember Lidice« (2015). In response to an appeal issued in 1967 by Sir Barnett Stross, head of the “Lidice-shall-live” committee, René Block invited, both in 1967 and 1997, young artists that were representative of the current German art scene to donate a work for a museum to be built in Lidice. The resulting collection distinguishes itself by high artistic quality and a cross section of the respective contemporary art production. For the project »Remember Lidice« artists have been invited for the third time to donate works for Lidice. With this chapter, the frame of reference will once more be broadened: What started out as a German-Czech issue with the contributions of 21 West-German artists in 1967 (»Hommage à Lidice«), and continued in 1997 as a project of a united Germany with contributions from 31 artists (»Pro Lidice«), will in 2015 become an international subject matter, with the participation of 44 international artists. The wish to expand the collection in Lidice, which is currently exhibited in the former community centre now reconstructed as a museum, by the newly donated works is meant to be a renewed gesture of solidarity. Beginning in September, the works will successively be collected in the exhibition space of Edition Block and can be seen there until February 2016. The once completed collection will also be shown at the Kunsthalle Mannheim before it will officially be handed over to Lidice.

Violence erupted on June 10 when hundreds of Uzbeks gathered near a dormitory in the center of Osh, Kyrgyzstan, allegedly in response to recent scuffles between Uzbeks and Kyrgyz. Human Rights Watch researchers working in southern Kyrgyzstan from June 10 to 22 documented the subsequent massive looting and destruction of civilian property and widespread acts of violence by Kyrgyz and Uzbek mobs in the city of Osh and the towns of Jalal-Abad and Bazar-Kurgan. While both ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks fell victim to the violence, Uzbek neighborhoods were particularly affected as mobs of ethnic Kyrgyz, many of them reportedly from villages surrounding the city of Osh, repeatedly attacked Uzbek areas.
From 1941-1942, the much more risky clandestine and ‘illegal’ resistance also took shape, mainly the underground press. The armed pro-Jewish resistance in Belgium (attacks, etc.) started in Belgium when it was too late for many people. After all, 17,000 Jews were deported in August-October 1942 via the Dossin barracks: almost 70% of the total number of deportees.

Dezember 2007 ausdehnen.
Meanwhile, Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda opposed the trial of President Kenyatta to be held in Kenya declaring that it would provoke protests from his supporters. Further, Bensouda wanted to expand the charges against Ruto adding crimes committed in the greater Eldoret area beginning on the 30 December, 2007. The ICC Judge Ekaterina declined this request citing delayed application which would unfairly burden the defence side.

His lady in time bore him a son; and when the child could just run to and fro, she died. The husband performed her obsequies, and then, said he, “What is home to me now? I and my son will live the life of hermits.” Leaving his friends and kindred in tears, he took the lad to the Himalaya, became a religious anchorite, and lived on the fruits and roots which the forest yielded.

The entire city has changed dramatically. In the old days, very few tourists ventured here, but now more and more are coming every day. There’s plenty to see, too: The giant yellow shipbuilding gantry cranes, Samson and Goliath, on the banks of the River Lagan, are city landmarks. In 2012, a Titanic Museum opened, where visitors can take a 3D ride from the engine room to the sun deck of the fated vessel. Just in case you didn’t know: The Titanic was built at a Belfast shipyard.

Right up to the slaughter of 22 July, Norway was considered immunised against extremism. Lacking real political connections, a radical movement has nonetheless organised. And its extent remains unknown.

There are reasons to applaud the forthrightness and comprehensiveness of the report, its care, and scrupulous willingness to conclude that both Israel and Hamas seem responsible for behavior that appears to constitute war crimes, if not crimes against humanity. Although Israel has succeeded in having the issue of one-sidedness focus on fairness to Israel, there are also some reasons to insist that the report falls short of Palestinian hopes. For one thing, the report takes for granted, the dubious proposition that Israel was entitled to act against Gaza in self-defense, thereby excluding inquiry into whether crimes against the peace in the form of aggression had taken place by the launching of the attack. In this respect, the report takes no notice of the temporary ceasefire that had cut the rocket fire directed at Israel practically to zero in the months preceding the attacks, nor of Hamas' repeated efforts to extend the ceasefire indefinitely provided Israel lifted its unlawful blockade of Gaza. Further it was Israel that had seemed to provoke the breakdown of the ceasefire when it launched a lethal attack on Hamas militants in Gaza on November 4, 2008. Israel disregarded this seemingly available diplomatic alternative to war to achieve security on its borders. Recourse to war, even if the facts justify self-defense, is according to international law, a last resort. By ignoring Israel's initiation of a one-sided war the Goldstone Report accepts the dubious central premise of Operation Cast Lead, and avoids making a finding of aggression.
