The attic "was packed with furniture, chests, boxes and suitcases that spurred my curiosity of course, in particular two white wardrobes in which I found wonderful things: sequined dresses, a top-hat, a tail-coat, evening gowns, furs, hats. I also discovered a box covered with a florid fabric. In it were letters, lots of letters, some jumbled, some lovingly tied together with silk ribbons."

Yesterday, the desired portion of Swiss fondue cheese began its journey from Switzerland to the base camp, with many letters and greetings from home. The packet has a long trip ahead - first to Germany, to Astrid, the daughter of Peter Becker, our expeditions and base camp doctor. Next week, Astrid will fly to Kathmandu and trek to the base camp. Heidrun, Eckhard's wife, is joining her. If everything works well, they will be able to celebrate the hopefully successful climb with a nice fondue.

I can't tell you how many letters I've received that typically say the following: "Our pastor just came back from a conference excited about a 'new formula for success.' He said our services have to be more friendly to sinners. So he completely changed the worship, as well as his sermons. It's a different place now. A few months ago, the Holy Spirit moved mightily here. But now people are leaving, because the Spirit is gone."

The local population in Troms Fylke in Norway is supporting us with letters in our fight to regain the old pastures and is demanding the same from Norwegian politicians. We have often felt this support in meetings, discussions, and contributions of the local media. Now we expect the same sort of understanding from those responsible in Oslo and Stockholm. It is time that the states and their politicians assume responsibility and let words be followed by actions. They need to prove they are not just protectors of minorities and advocates of a multi-cultural society in other countries or towards their own citizens but also when it comes to their own indigenous people - the Sámi!

Especially the simple things can sometimes be so unfamiliar and difficult. So how often are we happy? Our soul, our actual home and haven, is always in a state of cheerful happiness. However, we rarely take the time to be with ourselves and within our innermost being. We ignore our soul for so long and then ask ourselves why we feel so lonely and depressed. We can call this process yoga or become happy in some other way. Our soul does not care how we achieve this.

When Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart went to Vienna, he moved into a fully furnished room in the house of the Weber family – and met Constanze Weber. He married her against the will of his father and under the suspicious scrutiny of the widowed mother of Constanze, Cäcilia Weber. Despite all this, the marriage was to be a happy one, as many letters between the spouses prove. Constanze Mozart was a great support to her unconventional husband. She was musical, capable of managing a household, and enabled him to compose without interruptions. In the nine years until Mozart’s death, she gave birth to six children. He separated from her only unwillingly, and when the two were apart, he wrote her passionate letters full of longing.

Objects belonging to Adelheid Schulz (1909 - 2008) form a third focus of the exhibition. From 1928 to 1933 Schulz was responsible for catering in the Institute for Sexual Research and was present during the looting by the Nazis on the 6th May 1933. She kept many letters and photos from her time at the institute as well as some crockery which she managed to save from the grasp of the Nazis.

Franz Joseph I (1830-1916) had an understanding for his freedom-loving wife and approved her journeys, even though he missed her very much. The Emperor, who had been in power since 1848, saw himself as the first civil servant. Performing his duties at his desk in the Imperial Palace. To ease his loneliness during her travels, Sisi arranged an acquaintance with actress Katharina Schratt. The Emperor and his wife, however, remained friendly and wrote many letters to each other. The Empress travelled to Europe, Anatolia, North Africa and the Ottoman Empire. When she returned to the Imperial Palace, Franz Joseph enjoyed her presence very much. When Sisi was assassinated in Geneva in September 1898, her husband was deeply affected. Until his death in 1916, Franz Joseph, the long-serving Habsburg emperor, was a lonely man in the Hofburg.

In Senegal, too, sports programmes on TV are absolutely central: ‘On Sundays between 5pm and 8pm, everyone in Senegal sits down to watch wrestling matches on TV,’ reports Mamadou Mbaye. Most people then stay up all night drinking strong tea and discussing the techniques and tricks of this national sport and the wrong decisions made by referees. Many people in Senegal are jobless, says Mbaye, and so have too much time on their hands.

In an interview conducted by Marie Chaudey, Jaqueline de Romilly, a member of the Académie Française, laments the fact that "the French language is in a bad state, all too often used in a vague, confused and heavy-handed way. Not to mention the teaching of literature that is going through a crisis, struggling on every level. I receive lots of letters from strangers and it is impossible to tell if they are male or female because of the inconsistent use of both the first person masculine and feminine. ... Even journalists use a jargon when they aren't simply being pedantic! The precision of language is the absolutely necessary condition for the richness of thought. An impoverished language results in impoverished thinking. Finding the right word for something is capital. This applies in day to day life, but also when defending one's projects in a business, for example. It is by correctly expressing one's thinking that one can dominate it, make oneself understood and thus avoid that other means of expression which is violence."

After their third journey to Vienna (mid-July to September 25, 1773) the Mozarts moved into their new domicile on the former Hannibalplatz (today´s Makart Square 8). The spacious residence was large enough to receive friends and musicians. The actor, theater director and librettist of "The Magic Flute", Emanuel Schikaneder (1751-1812), was a frequent visitor. In this house Wolfgang wrote symphonies, divertimenti, serenades, piano and violin concerti and a bassoon concerto, arias, masses and other sacred music from 1773 - 1780. He composed the "Re pastore" K. 208, began his "La Finta giardiniera" K. 196 and "Idomeneo" K. 366. From 1773 to 1787, the year in which Leopold died, the Mozart family wrote 232 letters of which we have knowledge and a total of 215 letters were received at this address. Many letters were lost or no longer exist. Wolfgang often made fun of his landlady Mitzerl. On December 30, 1774 he wrote his sister from Munich: "... Give my best to the Virgin Mizerl, she shall not doubt my love for her, I constantly see her before me in her beguiling negligée; I have seen many an attractive maiden here but none can match her beauty ." This quotation has caused many Mozart biographers to see Mizerl as a girlfriend of Mozart´s but the good housewife was 46 years older than the 18-year-old Wolfgang at that time...
