Visualisation is an indispensable tool for simulation technology, assisting during the analysis of thereby generated data. This project for one investigates how visualisation methods can be integrated into a simulation framework based on workflow technologies. Herein the applicant may build its own custom-made visualisation with graphical tools. Furthermore new visualisation methods will be explored, e.g. to investigate the distribution of nerve tracts in the brain. Of great importance is also the visualisation of uncertain or diffuse data.

One of our products, Genedata Expressionist®, includes a large number of analysis and visualisation tools that enable the investigation of chromosomal alterations (CNVs), methylation events, polymorphisms, gene expression and gene regulation, for example. An important aspect is the ability to analyse all these data simultaneously in order to enable the application of statistical methods, an essential prerequisite for making scientifically founded statements. And of equal importance is the need for the analyses to be processed both quickly and efficiently whilst taking huge amounts of data into account.

Being able to scan from virtually any angle ups the volume of data that can be collected, which, when examined as a whole by medical practitioners, leads to results of superior precision and reliability.

The rover is based on the hybrid wheel-step robot Sherpa, the shuttle is based on Asguard, a result of project iMoby. As part of the research agenda the technology readiness of Sherpa will be increased, and along with it the space readiness of individual subcomponents. The mission control center, being the interface between human operator and exploration robot, consists on one hand of an upper body exoskeleton as it was developed in project Capio for controlling the systems, and on the other hand of modern visualization tools such as 3-dimensional multi-projection screens and head-mounted displays (HMDs). The experiences from project IMMI will be used to optimize the control center technology considering psycho-physiological data such as EEG and eye tracking (see video on operator support by embedded Brain Reading as developed in IMMI here).

Anna Hilsmann works in the "Computer Visions and Graphics" group of the Department of Image Processing at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, and is a PhD student of "Visual Computing" under Prof. Dr. Peter Eisert at the Humboldt University in Berlin. The focus of her work is to develop realistic visualisation techniques for virtual garments. This includes deformation and lighting assessments of deformable surfaces by using image-based optimisation techniques for exchanging textures in video sequences.

Such questions will serve as our point of departure for an exploration of the world of expressive interpretation. In light of the most recent research results we will witness a demonstration of how it is computers – of all things – that yield completely new insights into a phenomenon as seemingly intractable as musical expression. We will witness how new methods of visualization make the differences between individual pianists literally easy to see. And we will see computers in action that not only spot specific aspects of highly individual styles of interpretation but also describe them, use them for an identification of one of a number of outstanding pianists and even attempt to learn themselves to play music con molto espressione. We will hear about a computer that emerged victorious from a piano interpretation competition for computers. And, last but not least, we will perhaps be able to decipher a secret message that the great Glenn Gould concealed in a Mozart recording.

It is the objective of this research project to replace conventional viewing windows as can be found currently in machine tools by novel, intelligent machine windows. The intelligent machine window should represent a window and, at the same time, a user interface, in order to enable the operator the interaction with the machine. Further, according to the Augmented Reality Principle the machine interior will be extended by computer-generated information produced by value-added services. The mentioned functionalities of the intelligent machine window are found each in one of three information levels – machine interior, value-added services and operation – and they are depicted superimposed. The machine interior is directly visible through a transparent display or camera image or it is depicted by means of a realistic visualization on a conventional display. In case of the latter two visualization methods the reconstruction or visualization is performed in real time, so that the display can be used during the machining process. A perspective view is to be achieved by including head-tracking systems.

Prof. Dr. Liqiu Meng (born 1963) from Technische Universität München is one of the world’s leading experts in cartographic modelling and geodata visualisation. Liqiu Meng studies the formalisation of cartographic knowledge and its application. Among other things, she has designed a series of new methods for pattern recognition and geodata generalisation. Today many of these methods and algorithms are a standard component of cartographic software packages and are used in geodata integration. An important focus of her work over the past years was to develop cartographic visualisation methods for mobile services. Liqiu Meng has primarily made a name for herself with context-independent personalisation, taking the visual cognition and cartographic communication theories into account. Her work is of fundamental importance for multimodal navigation systems and services. Many of today’s mobile applications are based on the groundwork of Liqiu Meng and her working group. Liqiu Meng has been a member of the Leopoldina’s Geography Subsection since 2011.

In the field of Visual Analytics we provide a variety of customized visualizations for managing the specifics of data and analytical workflows. Structured data, such as semantic networks, is visualized using graph visualization methods. We apply geometry optimizations and innovative interaction techniques to facilitate discovery and exploration of relationships in complex knowledge bases. Unstructured data, such as large document collections, are represented using knowledge maps to expose the thematic composition of the entire data set. In combination with trend visualizations, knowledge maps are applied in settings with large influx of new documents, e.g., in patent or media analysis, to make reading every single document unnecessary. Adaptive visualization delivers visual interfaces that perfectly match the data and user preferences. Our research focuses on automatically adapting visual interfaces to various scenarios, in which we use the sematic characteristics of data and the user context to select and configure the optimal visualization out of a large pool of available representations.

Europe offers an abundant wealth of fictionalised landscapes and cities. The nascent research area of literary geography/literary cartography aims at visibly rendering such complex overlays of real and fictional geographies. At the crossroads of literary theory and cartographic visualisations new methods have to be developed: How to adequately can fictional settings be mapped by means of newly designed, tailor-made symbology? And what new insights can be gained from such an approach? For more than a hundred years literary criticism has been struggling with the question of how best to depict literary spaces on maps in an adequate and objectively accurate manner. Starting point is the observation, that each literary plot is located somewhere, along a scale of localisations that range from the realistically rendered, highly recognisable to the completely imaginary. Yet a concise theory and convincing instruments to deal with and comment on the specific geography of literature have been lacking until now. The solutions presented so far have to be considered only as partially satisfactory and the list of unsolved problems is long. It is against this background that an interactive prototype of a »Literary Atlas of Europe« is currently under development at the Institute of Cartography, ETH Zurich.
