Vom Abriss bis zur Raumausstattung
From demolition to decoration

Debate among the symposium participants, which ultimately flowed into the exhibition, was naturally spurred on by precisely those documents that were meant to play only a minimal role in the discourse: spread across the wall were typical architecture photos, building specifications, floor plans, and sections.

The knowledge of existing buildings is the unavoidable starting point when attempting the study of the built heritage of German colonization in Chile. On documentary rigor grounds, architectural surveys are usually the main research tool, based on careful measurement and observation of the buildings. Over the years, this approach has rescued many buildings from oblivion, when facing the demolition or neglect.

With a focus on a new generation of emerging and award-winning architects, who are trying to face the challenges of globalisation in a sustainable and conscious way, the exhibition series presents the latest developments in contemporary architecture. With projects such as the Ningbo History Museum and the China Art Academy, Wang Shu, recipient of the 2012 Pritzker Prize (Architecture’s Nobel Prize), is redirecting attention back to Chinese history, philosophy, nature and culture. With the reuse of materials left behind by demolition, the Amateur Architecture Studio deliberately distances itself from the influence of Western culture – seen as a clear consequence of globalisation in China. The name of the studio underscores its vision of trusting in spontaneity and of creating something new out of the already extant materials of Chinese culture and building tradition.

In her largely film-based works, Bertille Bak, born in 1983 in Arras near Barlin, frequently addresses the reality of the lives of marginalized groups, and the theme of expulsion repeatedly plays vital role. In "Transport à dos d'homme (2012), in a combination of film and sound installations the artist examines the everyday lives of Romany people in France, who were time and again subjected to the threat of deportation, by both Sarkozy as well as the Socialists, to their alleged country of origin. In 2010, Bak created the work "Safeguard Emergency Light System" in collaboration with the residents of a housing development in Thailand under threat of demolition, and in "Urban Chronicles (2011) the artist deals with East European immigrants in New York. The exaggerated narrative style of both films, which also immediately strikes the eye in "Faire le mur," abstracts from the concrete individual case as much as it turns it into something unique at same time.

For twenty years now, cities from Central Europe to Central Asia have seen revolutionary change. Following the collapse of socialism, their outward appearance, functional composition, and symbolic representation have been shattered and reassembled by new political forces and market economies. Yet, the legacy of socialist urban planning and imagination has neither just disappeared, nor did it come to coexist peacefully with the new. Rather, the story is one of conflict and hybridity, of replacement as well as of recodification. This volume explores such transformations from a variety of perspectives. Revealing a puzzling, heterogeneous vitality, the chapters contrast similarities with local specifics across half a hemisphere from Berlin to Astana. Authors include urban planners, architects, art and political historians, and literary theorists from across the region as well as from outside. Genres range from scholarly analysis to polemic essay, supported by rich visual material.

The subject of "Today Is the Past" is photography as a "trace of reality," as a medium that brings personal and collective history closer, makes it readable. Like the Bechers, many photographers today undertake the preservation of forensic evidence, but with very different methods of archiving, narrating and remembering-and they express their doubts about the reliability of the path. The washed out contours of missing family portraits that once hung on a bleached out piece of wallpaper are all that appear in Yto Barrada photos. In his refugee portraits, the Italian based Albanian artist Adrian Paci uses cardboard sets to replicate apartments in former home countries. The loss of cultural identity, home, and belonging are all recounted, as if on a stage. In Boris Mikhailov's sepia toned prints, 1980s Ukraine seems strangely distant. The trace of the moment that is captured by photography is in no way preserved; rather it is always a symbol of forgetting and disappearance.
