In practice, however, external factors lead to considerable energy losses. These include reflections on surfaces and interfaces, electrical resistance and the fact that it is not possible to optimally exploit the entire spectrum of visible sunlight. ‘The most powerful silicon solar cells have now reached 30 percent efficiency, and the available technology has just about reached its limits,’ explains Dr. Andreas Kunzmann from the Chair of Physical Chemistry I. ‘New impulses can only be reached by taking an alternative technological approach.’

Also stellten wir unsere Kostenstrukturen auf den Prüfstand. Unsere Messlatte waren die Stromerzeugungs-Kostenstrukturen der besten Steinkohlekraftwerks-Betreiber im internationalen Wettbewerb. Die Analyse ergab eine Kostenlücke von 30 Prozent, die es zu schließen galt. Ich habe die Bedenken der Mitarbeiter und deren Sorgen um ihre Arbeitsplätze noch gut in Erinnerung, aber alle zogen mit – und es gelang. Außerdem fassten wir den Beschluss, neue Märkte zu erobern: Wir bauten Kraftwerke in Kolumbien, in der Türkei und auf den Philippinen und schufen so neue und vor allem nachhaltige Ertragsquellen. Heute frage ich mich, was aus STEAG geworden wäre, wenn wir damals nicht den Mut für den Eintritt in den für uns unbekannten Auslandsmarkt aufgebracht hätten. Als sich 2004 die nächste Veränderung ankündigte – die RAG als Hauptaktionär hatte beschlossen, die Energieaktivitäten der RAG Saarberg in STEAG einzugliedern – nahm ich dies zum Anlass, mich in Abstimmung mit dem Aufsichtsrat in den Ruhestand zu verabschieden. Ich habe bei STEAG eine spannende Zeit erlebt, auf die ich auch heute noch dankbar zurückblicke“

„In my time as Chairman of the Executive Board, STEAG’s development was already marked by major changes that had to be mastered in order to keep STEAG on a successful course: In Western Germany, no new large-scale power plants were needed in the foreseeable future, and our opportunities were limited in the former East German states. The Leuna chemicals plant was the only place where we were able to win a contract. So we put our cost structures to the test. Our yardstick was the electricity generation cost structures of the best coal-fired power plant operators in international competition. The analysis revealed a cost gap of 30 percent, which had to be closed. I still remember well the concerns of employees and their worries about their jobs, but they all pulled together and moved along – and succeeded. We also decided to enter new markets: We built power plants in Colombia, Turkey and the Philippines, creating new and, above all, sustainable sources of income. Incidentally, the present head of STEAG, Joachim Rumstadt, made the complicated contracts for it watertight. Today I wonder what would have become of STEAG if we hadn’t had the courage to break into an unfamiliar foreign market. When the next change was announced in 2004 – RAG as the majority shareholder had decided to integrate the energy activities of RAG Saarberg into STEAG – I took the opportunity, in consultation with the Supervisory Board, to retire. I had an exciting time at STEAG, and I still look back with gratitude today.“

It’s precisely this local knowledge and roots that James also wants to incorporate in his beer, using regional products, which is why, for instance, in the grist he is opting for a content of 30 per cent rice to complement 70 per cent malt. And otherwise, too, he wants the beer to taste of authentic Filipino beach atmosphere – which is why James brought the (still secret) fruit that will be giving the beer its characteristic taste specially with him to Germany in his hand luggage. Back in the summer, we tested different brewing variants and verified experiments: in terms of both the fruit puree quantity and the timing of its addition. We then agreed on a relatively early addition together with the hops during wort boiling – firstly quite simply because this version tasted best when we sampled it. What’s more, the trial and error involved proves very helpful: “It’s great that I can work together here with brewmasters who have so much experience. In addition, it’s quite simply a lot of fun to test out the many different technologies and processes in the Steinecker Brew Center,” is James’ enthusiastic verdict.

The more debt a com­pany ac­cu­mu­lates, the higher its risk of slip­ping into bank­ruptcy. “A high bank­ruptcy risk has a num­ber of con­sequences: Par­tic­u­larly in highly spe­cial­ized in­dus­tries, cus­tomers will lose trust in the com­pany. There will also be a drop in in­vest­ments when cred­it­ors be­come re­luct­ant to provide fresh cap­ital for the com­pany due to the high bank­ruptcy risk,” Pro­fessor Zech­ner points out. “One key factor that often doesn’t re­ceive enough at­ten­tion are per­son­nel costs. Par­tic­u­larly in spe­cial­ized in­dus­tries, em­ploy­ees have to ex­pect fin­an­cial losses in the event of their com­pany go­ing bank­rupt.” If they still want be able to hire qual­i­fied em­ploy­ees, com­pan­ies with sub­stan­tial debts have to of­fer them higher salar­ies right from the start to bal­ance out these risks. Model sim­u­la­tions show that an in­crease in a com­pany’s debt ra­tio from 30% to 60% would cause its salary costs to rise by around 14%.

At the same time, journalists from national TV stations "1+1" and "STB" complained about censorship and manipulation. Since Yanukovych's assumption of office the opposition has been given very little airtime on Ukrainian television. Free and independent reporting is forced back to the printed press and the internet where it cannot reach the wider parts of the average Ukrainian population. "Reporters without Borders" and the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) have expressed their concern about the recent development. During the presidential election campaign Ukraine had still been a prime example of media pluralism and balanced reporting. Even political protest, which since the Orange Revolution had taken place in Kyiv almost daily, is facing restrictions. The remark of Ukraine's interior minister Mohylov that the opposition "may meet in a free place outside Kyiv and hold its meetings" is also a statement about the concept of democracy and the cynicism of some representatives of the new government.
