In all their stories, the survivors tell about their childhood—the time before their persecution—their arrest and time in the camp, and their life after liberation. These three groups of themes occupy varying amounts of space in the edited films of the 24 interviews listed on this Web page, depending on the geographic, cultural, and social backgrounds of these men, their individual histories of persecution, and the focal points of their accounts. The uncut interview material is accessible on request in the Archive of the Fritz Bauer Institute.

Rebay’s trajectory from her early childhood in Strasbourg, Germany (now France) to her later years in America is marked by three important relationships that run parallel and sometimes explain her divergent paths in the visual world. The first occurs in 1915 when she travels to Zurich and meets Hans (Jean) Arp; the second when she meets the artist Rudolf Bauer in 1917 through Arp at the gallery Der Sturm; and the third when she meets Irene and Solomon R. Guggenheim in New York around 1927 and accepts a commission to do Solomon’s portrait in 1928.

Sissa Micheli is showing the video Rue de la Tour – The History of a House in 8 Chapters (2009/2016). Based on the documentation of the Parisian villa in which she grew up, a young woman describes her family. Celia tells of her childhood, four siblings, the failed marriage of her parents and her life without her father who only ever came as far as the doorstep of the house. The slow travelling shot through the rooms chosen by Sissa Micheli visually conveys the mental process of remembering: The quiet flow of images as if from the subconscious is concretised by Celia’s voice and becomes a palpable current of experiences. Images and voice meld into a labyrinth of memories. The video is the third in a trilogy about living spaces that are just short of disintegration. In this series Sissa Micheli examines, in a very poetic and emotional way, how homes can awaken and store memories. Starting from Celia’s account she goes on to talk about general existential issues and feelings such as love, security and loss.
