When you begin exhibiting widely, you have to travel quite a bit to look at the spaces you’re working with. But while you’re thinking about your projects, you’re always somehow anxious to get back to the studio. It became an almost philosophical question for me: how to remain active on the international exhibition circuit and still retain the original aura of the work. Actually, the main part of my work resides in the craft: it’s manual; everything is handmade. And so when I began working with a 3-D program to assist me in developing a virtual concept for an exhibition space, this sudden introduction of technology was amazing. I use the software as an initial instrument to view my designs from above, to feel out the basic properties of things. For instance, after I went to see the pavilion in Venice, we created a 3-D model of the exhibition space on the computer. Then I started making small models of my artworks that I felt would be appropriate to the space; these were the outcome of a very intuitive process.

If there’s a part of this multifaceted city that has seen it all, it’s Lisbon’s city centre – the Baixa. After the Great Earthquake of 1755, this historic centre was successfully rebuilt due to the effort and persistence of Portuguese Prime Minister, Marquis de Pombal and is still considered one of the most impressive examples of architectural reconstruction in Europe for its advanced materials and techniques. The oldest part of this scenic location is Rossio, known for its street shoe-shiners, historic theatres and mix of restaurants and coffee shops. Wander through the dynamic Augusta Street to reach the stunning Praça do Comércio – one of Europe’s most distinguished squares and home to Lisbon’s oldest cafés – and enjoy the surrounding shops, open-air stalls and street performers that liven up the area. Also be sure to taste the country’s famous sweet cherry liquor at Rossio’s minuscule ‘Ginjinha’ tavern and to ride up the Santa Justa Lift to contemplate Lisbon from above.

Incredible: in an area of only 15,000 hectares, there are up to 20 lava flows and over 40 volcanic cones, all of which are dormant, fortunately! Nothing will stop you from enjoying a load of unforgettable experiences in the Garrotxa Volcanic Area, a unique natural space in the Iberian Peninsula. Take a balloon flight to see the volcanoes from the air; go horse riding through a fairy-tale beech wood growing on top of volcanic lava; walk up to a small hermitage in the middle of a crater; treat you

Although many people think gyrocopters are helicopters, these rotorcraft share much more with fixed-wing aircraft than they do with helicopters. This less expensive way to see the world from above from a helicopter-like aircraft continues to enjoy great popularity. Obtaining a corresponding pilot license is much easier, too.
