Toni Basil also appears as a white figure against a black background in the film BREAKAWAY (1966). She appears naked or dressed in outfits that play with strong contrasts and, again, abstractions of the human body and her movements in front of the camera are followed using alternating close-ups and full shots. The impression of immateriality and of a dance liberated from an identifiable body is created using formal parameters such as the montage speed, the acceleration and deceleration of the image sequence, Basil’s movement and that of the camera, and the varying dissolves.

Susanne Kamps (b. 1967 in Münster) studied painting from 1996 to 2001 at the Academy of Art in Münster. In her works, she concerns herself with the history of modernity.

The oval table forms the central point of the painting “Bambus-Tryptichon.” The background consists of subtle colors with arabesque elements. The composition is fringed on the sides by bamboo stalks before a black background. The artist harkens back to Matisse with respect to color and also motif. As was the case for her role model, color is the absolute design medium of the stand-alone visual space. Representational themes are constrained two-dimensionally in a foreshortening of perspective, so that a decorative effect dominates the whole picture.

At the beginning, 20 sample runs were processed with the Stroop task and a further 8 runs with priming. After this a total of 96 experimental runs were performed. The test was carried out in 2 blocks with a break lasting for as long as each subject chose. In each trial run, the white prime word was presented against a black screen for 200 msec. After 100 msec, the target was presented (SOA = 300 msec). When colored red, green, yellow or blue the target remained on the view screen until it was named, though never longer than 5,000 msec. Answers were spoken into a microphone. 3,000 msec after answering, the next prime appeared. The entire experiment took about 10 minutes.

Von dieser bleibt jedoch in den letzten sechs Minuten auch nichts anderes übrig als der ziel- und zwecklos vor sich hintreibende Rauch vor schwarzem Hintergrund, unterlegt mit elegischer Musik.

Large-format close-ups and slow camera pans through the plane's interior show us solitary individuals who all first and foremost do one thing: they smoke. As time passes so one starts to feel one is witnessing different types: a worried person, an intellectual, a carefree person, one who is bored, another who is inquisitive, a dreamer, a sad person. The filmic piece intimates some sort of narration, but one that exclusively arises in the mind of the beholder, as the persons say nothing and thus for us viewers essentially remain strangers. The passengers, surrounded by the timeless, geographically undetermined backdrop of clouds, seem caught up in an equally timeless, geographically unspecific non-space, left only to their own devices and the last remnant of something real: a cigarette. Yet in the last six minutes of the film all that remains of the cigarettes is wafting smoke, bereft of destination or purpose, seen against a black background and accompanied by elegiac music.
