Together they combine to yield a sustained computing power of around 860 teraFLOPs per second. This places Einstein@Home on par with the world's fastest supercomputers. The analysis of the archival Parkes data was completed in eight months, while the same task would have taken a single CPU core more than 17,000 years.

The Dresden-based watchmaker Ferdinand A. Lange laid the foundation for precision watchmaking in Saxony in 1845 when he founded his watch manufactory. His high-quality watches are still sought after by collectors from all over the world. After the Second World War, the company was expropriated, and the name A. Lange & Söhne was almost forgotten. In 1990, Walter Lange, the great-grandson of Ferdinand A. Lange decided to start anew. Only a few thousand gold or platinum wrist watches are now manufactured at Lange each year. Only in-house developed movements, decorated and assembled by hand, operate inside these watches. With 49 manufactory calibres, A. Lange & Söhne has now secured a top position among the best watchmaking brands in the world in a little more than 20 years. Innovative timepieces, such as the LANGE 1 with the first outsize date in a mass-produced wrist watch and the LANGE ZEITWERK with a precisely functioning numerical display, rank among the greatest accomplishments. Both models have now become icons of the traditional brand.

Gerade kleine Unternehmen, das wissen wir aus unserer langjährigen Erfahrung von allen Teilen der Welt, sichern ein Wirtschaftssystem gewissermaßen von unten ab. Jeder dieser Kleinstbetriebe mag nur ein, zwei oder drei neue Ar­­­bei­ts­­plätze schaffen, aber alle zusammen ge­­nommen haben sie großes Potenzial und enorme Kraft. Dass Tunesien mehr un­­ternehmerisches Engagement und mehr Privatwirtschaft braucht, besonders jetzt, steht außer Frage. Vor dem Umbruch stellte der öffentliche Sektor über die Hälfte aller formalen Beschäftigungs­ver­­hältnisse. Angesichts schwankender Steu­­er­­­einnahmen, eines wachsenden Haus­­halts­­­­­defizits und steigender Inflation kann – und sollte – die öffentliche Hand jedoch nicht mehr länger Hauptarbeitgeber im Land sein. Umso wichtiger sind kleine und mittlere Unternehmen für das wirtschaft­­­liche Fortkommen in Tunesien.

Over the past couple of years, KfW has intensified its cooperation with Tunisia and signed financing contracts of more than 120 million euros in 2011 alone. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has committed around 90 million euros in new funds for Tunisia for financial cooperation during each of the last two years; roughly two thirds of these pledges come from KfW’s own funds. For the time being, the intention is to maintain the commitment at this level, but diversify to other sectors, such as renewable energies. Tunisia still depends on fossil energy sources like gas and oil to cover more than 90 per cent of its needs, but the conditions for solar energy in particular are excellent. As it is vital that the Tunisian economy continues to grow, energy consumption is also rising – most recently by an average of four to five per cent annually. Meeting this demand in an environmentally com­­­­patible way and independent of any im­­­ports could bring long-term benefits – not only for Tunisia. With financial assis­­­t­ance from the BMZ and the EU, KfW is therefore planning a photovoltaic power plant in Tozeur, which could serve as a model for other plants.
