The answers confirm my hunch and Hitchcock’s message in the advertisement: A foreigner has indeed arrived and made posters about Angst! On the poster next to this, a word search presents the local police blotter concurrent to the week that Hitchcock visits Halle, hidden in a field of letters. In contrast to the serial murders by Beckert, the crimes in Halle portray a more or less blue-collar town with either desperate or juvenile criminals thieving things like potting soil, brush cutters and smashing mailboxes. But rather than finding the criminals, the poster sets up the game of finding the crimes, and like Bekert’s letter announcing his deeds to the newspaper, with a spirit similar to a serial killer.

Eric Karsenti’s original field of research at EMBL has little in common with marine research. His research group is mainly focused on research into how the mitotic spindle forms, the organization of the microtubules during the division of eukaryotic cells, and the biochemistry of the signalling pathways involved. This research is still ongoing, but Karsenti himself has devoted the last four years to the organization and coordination of the Tara Oceans Expedition and concentrated on marine research. He says about himself: "I have always been fascinated by the sea, and as a young student I wanted to be a marine biologist. Things did not turn out exactly like that, and I started a career in cellular and molecular biology. Tara Oceans is a new adventure for me. At 60, I feel the need for a change of pace, to address exciting and disturbing questions concerning the past evolution of our planet and its future. And of course, it is the ocean that concerns us all, because the ocean gave birth to life and life on earth still depends on it. I also felt the need to go to my fellow human beings to share the great adventure of breakthrough in scientific understanding of our universe, because science is not only technology but also a source of wisdom.“ This is the actual mission of the Tara Oceans Expedition.

The concept of Civil-Military Co-operation (CIMIC) as seen in the Bundeswehr and NATO is to support the implementation of a military mission. As an integral part of the planning and conduct of military operations therefore, CIMIC has little to do with humanitarian or development aid. Popular images of soldiers drilling wells or erecting school tents, however, suggest that, when it comes to CIMIC activities, the Bundeswehr particularly distinguishes itself in the (re-)construction of infrastructure. However, it is neither realistic nor desirable for soldiers to act as “aid workers.” In view of this discrepancy between operational reality and public perception, the nature and scope of CIMIC has elicited divisive discussion. Further conflict results from the fact that, as an self-protection measure, CIMIC is expedient and legitimate, however, the central task of armed forces in stabilization operations is to contribute to the creation of a safe and secure environment. In a deteriorating security situation such as in Afghanistan, the necessary degree of self-protection will inevitably have to be weighed against the establishment of security.
