Erweitert man das Punktefeld um 2 Stellen, erhält man die genaue Entsprechung des bei Computern heutzutage üblichen (oder etwa bereits wieder überholten?) 8-bit-Codes: es lassen sich eindeutige Braille-Darstellungen aller 256 Zeichen des 8-Bit-Codes bestimmen. So kann man sagen, die Braille-Schrift eigne sich sogar besser zur Darstellung der computergespeicherten Zeichen als die Normalschrift. Eine wichtige Schwierigkeit besteht freilich: Wenngleich der Computercode nicht mehr als 256 Kombinationen erlaubt, ist die Zeichenzahl auf dem Papier theoretisch unbegrenzt, denn mittels spezieller Codes kann erreicht werden, dass dieselbe Bitkombination unterschiedliche Zeichen auf dem Papier hervorbringt.

Strangely enough, information technology represents an approximation to the system which braille is based upon. The space required by a braille character is a cell of six positions with a dot or no dot at each one. This corresponds exactly to a 6 bit computer character - a dot is equivalent to a binary 1 and a space to a binary 0. If the cell is extended by two positions we have an exact correspondence to an 8 bit character which is nowadays (or no longer?) standard for computers, and we can define unique braille representations of all 256 characters of the 8 bit character set. Thus we could even say that braille is more suitable for representing computer stored characters than ordinary writing. However, there is a serious complication: whereas a computer character set has no more than 256 combinations, the number of different characters that can be printed out is theoretically infinite because special codes allow the same combination of bits to generate different characters on the paper.

The Special Steel Division, the Group’s special steel sector, yesterday signed a Letter of Intent to cooperate with Chinese foundry Kocel Machinery Co., LTD. Over the next few years voestalpine will invest around EUR 140 million, constructing a new plant which will produce premium special steel products for the Chinese market. Construction is scheduled to start in 2015, and the new company will create 400 jobs.
