The original lure of western culture had been its technology, especially fire arms and artillery. German-style training in science spurred British education, as, a century later, the Soviet launching of Sputnik inspired increased appropriations for American colleges and schools on the theory that the Russians had more rigorous training in science. In the 1930s and 1940s, it did seem that academic science was the key to technological advance. The atom bomb and electronic computers were first developed in that milieu. Yet, ultimately, U.S. education has been more concerned with building a homogeneous society. It has taken an immigrant population and taught them to be Americans. It has molded farm populations, veterans returning from war, racial minorities, and other irregular types into persons who could live in the cities and hold professional jobs. This function is not unlike that of teaching foreigners how to cope with western society. All the power and wealth that this society has to offer is made available to the one trained to make the right approach.

We face a different set of issues from those 40 years ago, in the last wave of really effective feminist activity. Social structures and gender expectations are in many ways more subtle and more complex than they were in the 1950’s and 60’s, and thus inevitably more difficult to identify and resist. It is clear that a second round of feminist scrutiny into the ways that we function as a society is both called for, and is indeed revving up. “If feminism takes this opportunity to shake off its current imperialist and consumerist sheen it could once again place its vital transformative political demands centre stage,” concludes Nina Power in One Dimensional Woman. I would add to that, that if feminism can take on the question of embodiment within Western culture and align itself with the movement to re-balance the primacy of mind it will make positive changes both for humanity in general and for the possibilities of women in this world.

It is significant that the Japanese term for "art" - bijutsu 美術 - was introduced during the preparations for Japan's first appearance at a world exhibition (Vienna, 1873). The term was derived from the German words "Kunstgewerbe" (arts and crafts) and "Bildende Kunst" (fine arts). The exact definition of this newly constructed term, and the decisions on what type of traditions and artifacts should be included or excluded were the subject of controversies based on the different cultural values in Japan and in the West. In my thesis, I analyze the complex relations between Japan and Europe in regard to the term bijutsu and the various interpretations of the word and concept during the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. A study of the primary sources at the time of the first Japanese contacts with European art and architecture (e.g. the Iwakura Mission to Western Countries, 1871-1873) should help to better understand these important processes. The main aim of my research is to investigate the Japanese reception of Western ideas and objects on the development of "modern art" - kindai bijutsu近代美術 - in Japan. Examples of the so far unknown collection of Meiji period (1868-1912) objects at the Ethnological Museum of St.Gallen in Switzerland will further serve to illustrate the impact of Western culture on the origins of kindai bijutsu in Japan.

It is shaped like a traditional “chefferie”, with the highest possible points symbolising power and wealth. The work’s shape, however, also refers to the diamonds which make up the rest of the sculpture. In Western culture, these diamonds are considered the epitome of luxury, wealth and material happiness (and happiness in love). Unfortunately, diamonds are often mined in less than optimal conditions in their country of origin. The artist wants to encourage visitors to encounter each other in this special location and exchange experiences.

One of the most interesting artists on the Swiss Francophone music scene is back again this year with a new project: an encounter between a traditional Iranian orchestra and the blues, rock & roll influences of Jack is Dead. From this confrontation is born a universe oscillating between the vagabond vapours of the Orient and the brute force of bluesy rock. This middle earth is a place of exchange between the traditional Iranian repertoire and Western rock culture, and the result is more than just a little surprising.
