Hussein Chalayan interpreted the Silk Route in a series of his three carpet designs. He decided to combine oriental aspects of traditional carpets together with western modern culture therefore the “Approaching” carpet combines traditional frames together with a modern motif. The design in the middle of the carpet is an interpretation of a modern video game character within a traditional framework. Colors used within this carpet are kept traditional with the exception of the neon pink.

The black and white images of Between Visible and Invisible were made from 1999 to 2003. For the most part, they depict texts and letters by influential writers, architects, scientists, and politicians of the twentieth century-James Joyce, Gandhi, Tanizaki, Le Corbusier. Yoneda's camera gazes upon a work that was of key importance for these intellectual heroes through the very eyeglasses they once wore. Only the part that can be seen through the lens is legible, while the rest remains blurry. Le Corbusier's Glasses-Viewing L'Habitation Moderne, his plan for a new architectural vision of Paris (2003) shows the architect's notes on one of the most important projects of architectural modernism. In Freud's Glasses-Viewing a text by Jung II (2003), the father of psychoanalysis gazes at an essay by his colleague C. G. Jung, with whom he was connected by a long, conflict-ridden relationship. This work also addresses a chapter in 20th-century history: while Freud emigrated to London following the invasion of Austria by German troops in 1938, Jung's role throughout the Nazi era remains highly controversial. Yoneda's work continually explores western culture and history. This interest originally led her to study photography at the University of Illinois in Chicago and at the Royal College of Arts in London.

Unlike its ideographic predecessor, alphabetic writing was a script for practical persons such as merchants. They were men of quick intelligence who had seen much of the world. Anyone could figure out the meaning of words from the sounds of a relatively small number of letters. The relative ease of learning alphabetic script meant that its use was not limited to professional scribes. The alphabet became a force for democratizing knowledge. In India, for instance, Brahmin priests had turned themselves into a privileged class through their control of memorized rituals. A semi-alphabetic script, Brahmi, was introduced there during a period of commercial contact with mideastern peoples in the 7th century B.C. The religious revolution that took place in India during the 6th century B.C. represented a protest against the elaborate rituals and sacrifices controlled by the priests. Both Buddha and Mahavira offered salvation through personal enlightenment to all persons, regardless of birth, who were devoted to following the way of truth.

One answer to the technical and scientific superiority of western Europe were ordered reforms “from above”, such as those the authoritarian, but modernization oriented Egyptian ruler Mohammed Ali (1806-1846) intended when he sent a study commission to Paris. Under the leadership of Rifa’a al-Tahtawi (1801-1873) a group of students visited the city in order to inform themselves over the western state of science and technology. The travelogue first appeared in verse form in 1834 in Arabic under the title “A Muslim Discovers Europe. One Egyptian’s Travel to Paris in the 19th Century.”

Richard Prince pulls the imagery for his pop-culture photographs out of the anonymous acreage of advertising and magazines, while his "painting" draws on the myths of high culture. Here, too, he exploits existing materials, appropriating jokes and cartoons largely created by writers and cartoonists of cult status for such cultivated playgrounds as the New Yorker, their trenchant humor vented on values which are in effect thereby consolidated. The jokes Prince has chosen are infected with a certain fustiness of social convention. They deal with the relations between the sexes and feed on mutual, ingrained prejudices. They ignore developments, on the march since the 1960s, like the sexual revolution or the emancipation of women and ethnic minorities, and expose still active or reactivated formulas of social reality in the mood of the mythological "sell-by" dimensions of Western culture.

It seems that when an economy experiences an upswing, then the global art world becomes more interested in the region. Alongside China, India has been considered a boom country for contemporary art for a few years. And buyers of Western art are shifting their sights increasingly to Asia. The demand is particularly growing in the emerging countries. While in 2008 buyers from China and Hong Kong accounted for 20 percent of Christie's global sales, in 2009 it was 35 percent. In the face of the recession in Western industrial countries, the new financial centers appear to be the new art centers. Artists who had previously been excluded from the global art market now have access to it. The dominance of Western culture seems to have yielded to a new, more complex understanding for a changed global landscape. But there are also side effects. Recently, auction houses began directly commissioning artists from the new art centers to create works for auctions. This has resulted in highly commercial art scenes in which salability and geographic origins are more important than quality and differentiation. In countries such as India the art academies are antiquated and cannot keep up with the rapid development. Is the next collapse in the offing? Or is the future of a globalized art world only just beginning? What opportunities and risks does this development present in your opinion?

Serbia sits at the crossing of the ways of Eastern and Western culture, and this has been a major influence on the unique cultural heritage of this region. Especially numerous are mediaeval Byzantine and Orthodox monuments, first and foremost those Serbian monasteries and churches from the 12th century and later, as well as the remains of Turkish and Austro-Hungarian structures.

A stylish young couple in a convertible. The oversized umbrella protects them from the vagaries of everyday life, symbolised by the cryptic abbreviation ‘PIT – 53.’ This stands for a Polish tax form which drives all who are obliged to file it regularly to distraction. State repression is also alluded to by the images of Polish punk bands. In the 1980s, they were frequently banned from appearing on stage. Car Mobile Collage is a typical example of Paulina Olowska’s artistic strategy. For this work, she reproduced pictures from newspapers in order to collage and then transform them into silkscreens. She then worked on these large prints with foils and crayons. Only few contemporary artists make such virtuoso use of the pool of images from art history and pop culture as this young woman from Poland. Socialist chic encounters Western modernism, propaganda meets advertising. All of Olowska’s works share the principle of montage, which opens up new perspectives on familiar images.
