The experimental working group of the division is concerned with precision experiments on stored and cooled ions as well as with the investigation of fundamental processes of molecular ions. For this purpose short-lived radionuclides, highly-charged ions or simple molecular ions are trapped in Penning traps and storage rings under conditions as they also occur in space. Another main research field of the division is the development of novel storage, cooling and detection techniques for future experiments.

Research on deep-sea hydrothermal vents in the Atlantic is the objective of the 30 marine scientists from Hamburg, Bremen, Kiel, Portugal, and France who have been on board the German research vessel Meteor since September 6th. The expedition to the submarine volcano Menez Gwen near the Azores is financed by MARUM, the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences in Bremen. "One of the questions that the team would like to answer is why the hydrothermal sources in this area emit so much methane - a very potent greenhouse gas," says chief scientist Nicole Dubilier, who is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Census of Marine Life Vents and Seeps project ChEss (Chemosynthetic Ecosystem Science). "Another important focus of the research is the deep-sea mussels that live at the hydrothermal vents and host symbiotic bacteria in their gills. The mussels obtain their nutrition from these bacteria."

Malaria is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the world and leads to 2 Million deaths annually. Despite many efforts, no final therapeutic solution has been developed to fight the disease. The life cycle of Plasmodium falciparum, the agent responsible for more than 90% of the Malaria cases, involves a blood stage in which the parasite resides and multiplies in red blood cells. One important research focus for developing anti-Malarial drugs is the invasion step of the erythrocyte by the freshly released merozoites. Although many proteins with diverse functions in the process of invasion have been reported the overall scheme of the invasion process has not been completely solved. It’s known that glycosylated proteins on the membrane of red blood cells are important for the internalization of the parasite, with the glycan moiety playing a critical role. In addition, glycan structures on the parasite’s surface might also be involved in the process. Our focus is to understand the actual function of the glycan structures on both host and parasite membranes in order to help clarify the molecular mechanism of the invasion process, using biochemical and cell biological means.

The Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine is embedded in an excellent scientific scenery. Münster accommodates eight Colleges and Universities with a total of 50.000 students. The pronounced connection to the University and the University Hospital was already established during the founding period of the Institute. The Max Planck Institute particularly liaises with the Medical Faculty; two directors are member of the Faculty, and the third director was jointly appointed by the Max Planck Institute and the Medical Faculty. Life Science is a core theme of research in Münster, with a strong emphasis on molecular medicine, and strongly benefits from the vicinity and cooperation of the institutions. These conditions make a unique scientific framework for the internationally oriented Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine, which enables the Institute to pioneer in the modern, medically relevant research of organ system development, like that of the vascular system.

Multilingualism, language politics and language minorities represent a particularly important field of research of the Contemporary History Section. In recent years, a series of research projects have been dedicated to these subjects. The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) project "Universities as Social Laboratories: History of Bilingualism at the University of Fribourg" (2003-2006, Urs Altermatt and Christina Späti) analysed the history of bilingualism at the University of Fribourg regarding changes and turning points in the conceptions of bilingualism in different bodies involved. The project "Language and Identity Politics" (SNSF-Project 56, 2006-2010, Damir Skenderovic and Christina Späti) investigated the policies of Swiss political parties regarding autochthonous and allochthonous minorities since the 1960's, and with it the role of parties in processes of identity formation. Language was hereby considered as important element for the presentation and instrumentalisation of collective identity. Apart from these projects, several members of the Contemporary History Section have conducted individual research on language politics. Recent studies are Christina Späti’s habilitation thesis "Language as Political Issue. A Comparison between Switzerland and Canada since the 1960's" (2012) and Irma Gadient’s Master thesis "The Debates on the Restriction of Patois in the Canton of Fribourg (1872-1887)" (2010).
