Diesen spannungsvollen Widerspruch von Natur und Industrie sieht man auch dem Lausitzer Seenland an. Die IBA will diese Spannung nicht nivellieren, sondern inszenieren. Dazu suchte sie ein greifbares Symbol und schrieb deshalb 2005 mit der Stadt Senftenberg einen internationalen Architekturwettbewerb für eine »Landmarke Lausitzer Seenland« aus. Im Zentrum der Seenlandschaft, am Sornoer Kanal, zwischen dem Sedlitzer und dem Geierswalder See, zwischen Brandenburg und Sachsen, sollte ein Aussichtsturm entstehen, der auch eine Skulptur, ein Symbol für den Landschaftswandel darstellt. Als Sieger aus 145 Entwürfen ging die Bürogemeinschaft Stefan Giers aus München und Landschaftsarchitekturbüro Giers aus Wettenberg hervor. 2008 konnten die LMBV als Projektträger, die Stadt als Bauherr und die IBA als Initiator gemeinsam die Eröffnung feiern – passend zum Themenjahr »Seensucht Lausitz« der IBA.

It will be not only the biggest artificial lake district in Europe but the biggest lake district, artificial or otherwise, in Germany – and it is already bigger than the Müritz Lake District. But the Lusatian Lake Land will be more than a »second-rate Mecklenburg Lake District.« These lakes were created by human hand, and the IBA has no wish to pretend otherwise. What sets the Lusatian Lake Land – and the region as a whole – apart, is the tension between industrial and natural influences. Despite 150 years of mining, sweeping industrialisation and an influx of ten thousand workers, the region has always retained a certain rural identity. Here, the historic Spreewald cultural landscape collides with uniform conifer plantations, and old cultural landscapes combine with meadows and fruit trees on the sandy deserts left by lignite mining. Isolated power plants and factories – monuments to industry – are dotted, seemingly randomly, around the landscape.

Predictions by the model suggest that the central regions of galaxies should rotate at greater speed than is effectively indicated by astronomical measurements. As a result, the model implies a significantly higher density of CDM at the galactic core than allowed by measurements. For nearly two decades astrophysicists, particle physicists and astronomers have struggled to resolve this «Cold Dark Matter catastrophe», as this discrepancy is called among specialists, and to propose an convincing explanation for the varying behavior of DM at different scales. To date all attempts at explanation have fallen short or led to further irresolvable discrepancies. An international research group including Professor Lucio Mayer of the University of Zurich as one of three project leaders has now succeeded in unraveling this conundrum using a highly sophisticated supercomputer simulation.
