Wear-resistant cast irons of the chromium cast iron and Ni-Hard families are known for their high resistance to wear. They are used preferably where non-metallic materials cause abrasive wear, for example minerals in crushing, mixing and conveyor systems. A high proportion of iron or chromium carbides is embedded in the crystal structure of these wear-resistant grades of cast iron, and these act as hardeners. The harder the material becomes compared with the abrasive medium it is in contact with, the less wear occurs due to micro splintering at the contact surfaces. This in turn extends the service life of the tool or equipment, with resulting cost benefits and advantages for the application. Differing chromium contents give these materials a medium to high resistance to corrosive attack.

Memory is built with semiconductors and not with magnetic core. The same peripheral devices like IBM-typewriter, plotter and card-reader (picture) may be connected to both, the 700 and the 600.

Tim Berne’s third ECM album, You’ve Been Watching Me, sees the saxophonist-composer again leading his ultra-dynamic New York band Snakeoil, but with the quartet now a quintet with the arrival of guitarist Ryan Ferreira, whose sound adds textural allure. The group’s 2013 release, Shadow Man, garnered Berne some of the highest praise of his career as a composer and bandleader, with JazzTimes marveling over how his work grows “wilder and deeper.” The four-star DownBeat review said: “This music rocks and thinks, explores, deconstructs and, yes, it swings, in its own identifiably angular, Berne-ian way.” Just as Berne has hit a new peak with his writing on You’ve Been Watching Me, his band has reached a heightened state of collective interaction, realizing the compositions to a tee. Snakeoil – with the leader on alto sax alongside pianist Matt Mitchell, clarinetist Oscar Noriega, percussionist Ches Smith and Ferreira on electric and acoustic guitars – can still be bracingly kinetic. But there is new space in these compositions and more lyrical focus to the improvisations, leading to a dramatic, even cinematic experience in such tracks as “Embraceable Me.” Put simply, Berne’s music has never been richer or more arresting.

After the political changes of 1989/90, these hidden assets began to receive more and more attention. The reunification and the region’s sudden de-industrialisation had a devastating impact on the local labour market – but were a boon for the environment and for certain cultural monuments. The run-down historic city centres in Cottbus and Senftenberg and the historic factory houses in Brieske and Lauta were renovated. Not only was the backlog of countless open-cast mine sites in need of recultivation largely cleared, but the birth of the Lusatian Lake Land transformed what had been a moonscape from a »liability« for Lusatia into an »asset.« Many of the old power plants and factories proved to be real industrial treasures, attracting crowds of visitors.

The Liechtenstein Waldorf School operates according to the teaching methods of the Rudolf Steiner tradition. The content of the school's curriculum is virtually identical to that of public schools. Unique to the Waldorf School is the subject Eurhythmics, the art of harmonious and expressive bodily movement in response to the spoken word, vocal and instrumental music. Foreign language instruction (English and French) is offered starting in the first class.

Uklański has a reputation for a certain insolence with regard to the way he plays with audience expectations, the way he not only uses strategies of selfpromotion and marketing but also draws on them for fundamental aspects of his conceptual work, and the way he coopts references. He starts with pictures that are already bankrupt, hackneyed, and hollow and proceeds to totally destroy them. He recycles visuals, concepts, and clichés—landscapes, sunsets, Hollywood, great artists, collectors, curators—and gives them a new presence, both crass and seductive, precisely by questioning the politics of different visual worlds. But it would be wrong to describe his approach as either critical or affirmative. These categories will not stick to his perfect surfaces, just as they won’t stick to the works of Jeff Koons.
