Tanzania’s current drive to boost agri-business with investments from abroad has some merits, but the effect on smallholder families and the food security of the country remains highly doubtful.

These are the basic questions that motivate the work of the ReLoClim Research Group. Regional climate models are applied and refined at very high resolution and provide the basis for interdisciplinary investigations of the regional impacts of climate change. Recent applications of our research includes studies about drought- and hail damage risks in agriculture, extreme precipitation and flooding, and heating and cooling energy demand.

The KlimaCampus members - the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, the University of Hamburg as well as the German Climate Computing Centre together with the Climate Service Center - will be represented by a joint stand at the Rathausmarkt from Friday 23 September to Sunday 25 September. An interactive projection globe will show recent research results e. g. about possible future changes in temperature and precipitation and the KlimaCampus urban climate exhibition will inform about the effects of climate change on life in our cities.

To answer these questions, I calculated the effects of climate change on agricultural production in the European Union (EU) up to 2100. To do so, I analyzed an extensive EU Commission dataset: about 80,000 agricultural businesses from all member states were surveyed over a 20-year timespan. Every year those surveyed provided information on more than 1000 aspects – for example what and how much they produced, which areas they irrigated, and whether the farmers leased or owned the agricultural land. Information on their age and how they run their business was also collected, since these factors have an effect on how farmers respond to the changes.

The sole instrument is MIRAS (Microwave Imaging Radiometer using Aperture Synthesis), the real star of the mission and the result of over 10 years of research and development. It collects observations by measuring microwave radiation emitted from the Earth’s surface – based on the contrast between the electromagnetic properties of liquid water and dry soil, and between fresh and saline water. The huge inherent challenge was that, to do this, it needs to operate in L-band, long wavelength, classically requiring a very large antenna, which would be too big to be carried on a satellite …

The NCCR Climate does not only carry out basic research, it also co-operates with partners from the industry. In a recently published study, NCCR Climate researchers and the reinsurance company Swiss Re examined how future climate change will affect the storm damages in Europe. For the first time, climate models were combined with loss models. The result: the forecasted increase in the strength and frequency of winter storms will result in substantially higher damages. For the period of 1975 to 2085, Swiss Re expects an increase in the amount of damages of up to 70 per cent. What has always been suspected has now become clear: climate change poses a challenge to the insurance industry. Enterprises such as Swiss Re see themselves confronted with the task of coping with increased risk, while systematically integrating it into risk assessment and management.

The discussion in Flensburg focused in particular on the question of climate change and how it will impact energy systems. What will be the consequences? How can we establish sustainable energy use technologies and practices in poorer areas? Alumni from Asia, Latin America and Africa presented examples of successful projects. They talked about challenges faced during the early conceptual and start-up phase of projects, and also discussed success factors, financing issues and their visions for the future. Schläpfer was particularly impressed with the example of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Rural Industrialisation in India, which has fought for years to improve the situation of the poor in rural areas. Clearly, energy plays an important role in this context. Today, for example, people in these rural areas are successfully producing textiles from organic material and using exclusively solar energy to power the process. For August Schläpfer, these are interesting developments. Schläpfer and the alumni all believe that the University of Flensburg could make important contributions to further development on this front.
