Der niederländische Autor Geert Mak, der zuletzt ein Buch über Istanbul geschrieben hat, spricht im Interview mit Alan Posener und Jennifer Wilton über die geschichtliche Dimension europäischer Städte: "In Europa ist selbst eine junge europäische Stadt wie Berlin randvoll mit Geschichte. In Istanbul allerdings wird die Geschichte mit dem Bulldozer entsorgt. Das alte osmanische Istanbul ist kaum noch aufzufinden... Damit ist die Stadt Teil einer Entwicklung, die Robert Kaplan einmal das neue Nomadentum genannt hat. Millionen Menschen leben abwechselnd in dieser und jener Stadt, wobei die Städte miteinander verbunden sind und einander immer ähnlicher werden. Kaplan nennt sie 'Metroplexe'. Auch meine Heimatstadt Amsterdam gehört dazu. In solchen Städten schlagen Menschen keine Wurzeln. Die alten Stadtteile existieren nur noch als Freilichtmuseum. Aber es gibt auch eine Gegenreaktion... Wir Menschen haben eine große Gabe, Städte anonym zu machen. Aber auch eine große Gabe, sie uns wieder anzueignen."

"Even a young European city like Berlin is filled to the brim with history. But in Istanbul, history is being removed with a bulldozer. The old Ottoman Istanbul can scarcely be found. ... The city has become part of a development that Robert Kaplan once called the new nomadism. Millions of people rotate between this city and that one, while the cities themselves become more closely linked, and more similar, to each other. Kaplan calls them 'Metroplexes'. And my home town of Amsterdam is one of them. People don't put down roots in such cities. The historic sections are merely open-air museums now. But there is also a counter-reaction. … We people have a great knack at making cities anonymous. But we also have a great ability to make them our own again."
