The competence field Tailored Thermosets & Biomaterials performs research and development on composite materials with functional properties based on thermosetting polymers, bio-polymers, hybrid systems and nanocomposites. We make use of bio-based, sustainable resources wherever it is technically, economically and ecologically reasonable. Targets are the continuous adaption and improvement of material and the integration of multiple functionalities within one specifically customized composite. Requirements are e.g. high modulus, strength and excellent damage tolerance flame resistance, electrical conductivity, heat/sound/corrosion protection, barrier effect, low wear, intrinsic lubrication and recyclability. We work on solutions to replace toxic polymer solvents by non-toxic versions. New materials are applied e.g. as composites, foams, bulk resins, and coatings. We apply nanotechnology and make use of commercially available nanoparticles as well as in-house synthesized particles.
