Earlier projects about compressed air energy storage revealed two elements that need further development: The heat exchanger in the working chambers and the motor/generator (motgen). The BOP-B is in fact a high efficient compressor or air motor. But it can only work efficiently if the compression or expansion of the air takes place in a mostly isothermal way. Therefore heat exchangers have to be placed in the working chambers for a good heat exchange to the environment. First tests revealed that the chosen heat exchanger fulfils the thermal expectations. But there are some strange effects around that liquid piston system, which need further development of the test infrastructure. Therefore a further project is launched for finding out more. For a possible application of the BOP-B as a storage in small stand alone systems, in a second part a high efficient motor/generator (motgen) should be developed. The goal was set to 90% efficiency (including power electronics) in one direction at a rated voltage of 24VDC and 1500W input power. The chosen approach of a ironless machine was not successful. The elimination of the iron losses was abolished by other losses (aerodynamic and eddy losses in copper). Nevertheless substantial perceptions could be gained. As a by product of the actual motgen development a reliable 70A EC-motor control and an unconventional torque measurement equipment were developed. They proved to be very useful for testing the prototypes.

This procedure is used for the measurement of electrically non-conductive and non-magnetic coatings on a non-ferro-magnetic, electrically charged base material (NF metal). How does the amplitude sensitive eddy current method work? An exciter current is first used to generate a high frequency magnetic field. This results in conductive, non-magnetic base material eddy currents. The strength of these eddy currents is dependent on the distance or coat thickness between the measuring probe and the base material. The measurement signal created by the eddy current is then transformed into the precise coat thickness value in a special measuring device, via the probe characteristics – the functional interrelation between measurement signal and coat thickness.

The fusion reaction inside a thermonuclear reactor is driven at high throughputs of the two hydrogen isotopes deuterium and tritium. The plasma has to be maintained under stable vacuum conditions of about 10-2 mbar. Besides the very high pumping speeds needed to accomplish this, there are other criteria which can not be met with standard commercial vacuum pumps. High magnet fields do not allow the use of fast rotating rotors (as typical for turbomolecular pumps), which would rapidly heat up. Organic materials (lubricants, O-ring seals, electrical insulations) cannot be used in all system parts exposed to the tritiated process gases. The vacuum pump system must also be compatible to strong mechanical forces caused by plasma disruptions. Consequently, a dedicated R&D programme was accomplished, which culminated in the development of special cryogenic pumps.
