Work is a major contributor to living a fulfilled life, and thus to quality of life. Likewise, involuntary exclusion from the world of work generally has a negative effect on health. It is also well known and well documented that work can interfere with health for a wide variety of reasons. The question therefore arises of which conditions are required for health to stabilise and which conditions have an effect upon health. Working on the basis of the individual in all their diversity, we are investigating the conditions under which work has an effect on quality of life and the conditions under which this effect is diminished. We are also considering the factors and resources which strengthen resilience, as well as the factors and conditions which increase vulnerability. Particular attention is paid here to the interaction between workload and work resources, which promotes health and well-being in the best case scenario and causes medical conditions and illness in the worst. This is rounded out by not treating work as an isolated issue but rather considering it in interaction with spheres of life outside of gainful employment. We will be investigating conflicts and enrichment processes, in other words negative and positive carry-over effects between work and private life and their effect on health and well-being.

The quantitative part study of the young researcher’s publication and research networks has been completed. Selected findings are presented in a contribution to a collective work (Kenk 2012). The visualisation links individual and professional characteristics with their networks. I pursue the question of what types of networks, forms of learning environments and professional development can be discerned in the graphical chart from the context of the research programme. The findings reveal that close mentoring relationships as well as “communities of practice“ can be found and that the types of networks change throughout a career.

The Thesis conducts a comparative political analysis of the Russian-speaking population living in the successor states of the Soviet Union. The comparison is drawn between the Baltic States Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as Ukraine, stating the size and historical background of the Russian-speaking population as parallel variables. The analysis considers the historical formation of the Russian community during the Soviet period, its situation during and after the collapse of the Soviet Union and throughout the periods of transition and democratic consolidation. With that the question is raised, whether a dependency can be found between the system change, the new regime and the position of the Russian-speaking population within the new system. The Russian-speaking population in the countries under study experienced a somewhat special status during the Soviet period. How this status has changed since then and which part the Russian-speaking population has played ever since the systematic shift – these questions state an essential part of the analysis. Concurrently, differences between the democratic consolidations of the countries and the position of the Russian-speaking population are carved out. The international influence exerted on the policy of the countries towards the Russian-speaking population is likewise important and is looked into in the course of research. Theoretical fundament consists of transition theory, as well as sociological concept of assimilation. The Thesis thus makes an interdisciplinary contribution to research in the areas of minority issues and democratic transition.

Es geht darum ein näheres Verständnis zur einstigen Funktion der sehr stark fragmentierten, oft nur wenige Zentimeter große Objekte vom antiken Schlachtfeld in Kalkriese zu erlangen. In einem zweiten Modul wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob einzelne Legionen einen so genannten metallurgischen Fingerabdruck aufweisen.

The focus of the entire project’s first module is the cultural and historical categorization of the finds from Kalkriese. Its aims at reaching a better understanding of the former function of artifacts from the antique battlefield, which are extremely fragmented and often measure just a few centimeters. The second module is dedicated to the question of whether individual legions left behind a distinctive, so-called metallurgical fingerprint. This new approach could reveal the origin of the Roman military units that were destroyed in Kalkriese by comparing the results with those from other archaeological sites like Xanten and Vindonissa. To this end, modern analysis methods will be applied. About 600 finds consisting of non-ferrous metals will be closely examined via mass spectrometry, electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and laser ablation (removing of material by irradiating it with a laser beam). A third module is dedicated to the extraordinary group of glass eye finds. The function of these smaller-than-life eyes is unknown. Did they embellish furniture? Or were they placed on deathbeds, so-called klines, in the context of burial rites? And why were they brought to the battlefield in Kalkriese? In the course of a major comparison project, the chemical composition of a total of 23 glass eyes discovered so far in the region that used to be Germania, ie. glass eyes from Kalkriese, Haltern, Oberaden, Anreppen, Xanten and Augusta Raurica (Switzerland), will be analyzed. On the one hand, researchers wish to learn how these unusual objects were produced, on the other hand they wish to find out to which other items these glass eyes were originally attached by analyzing materials adhering to them.
