Students will acquire practical expertise in state-of-the-art molecular and cellular research techniques, including multicolour flow cytometry, biochemical analyses, a wide range of immunological assays, high-end live imaging techniques, and pharmacological strategies as well the role of various mouse models for cancer and inflammation.

‘When a man wants to take a fertility test he has to go to hospital where a lab has to research the sperm cells with a microscope. With the chip we’ve been researching the man can do it at home. That test doesn’t work like a pregnancy test with a simple ‘yes or no’; the concentration and mobility of spermatozoa is measured. With the use of Labs-on-a-chip (a mini laboratory on a chip) we can test sperm cells on DNA-level without harming them.’ Working with Labs-on-a-chip has numerous advantages. ‘They are able to integrate multiple processes; only small amounts of liquids are needed and because of its small size they allow us to look at the characteristics of individual cells. In this specific case I expect that capacity measurements can be used in order to measure the degree of damaged DNA in the individual spermatozoa. Subsequently we can also separate the working cells from the rest creating a good population of cells for further treatment. It leads to changes in both diagnostics as well as treatment. Therefore, it has a large impact.’

To predict the structural behavior and to apply system theoretic methods, a model of the structure is needed. In this sub-project the modelling and simulation of adaptive structures is done, where the resulting models can be used for observer and control design. Another task covers the implementation of a system for optical deformation measurements to estimate the system’s state. Now control strategies are researched, e.g. in the area of connected and distributed control. Moreover, the system is subject to security regulations because failure leads to catastrophic consequences. Therefore, methods for reliable elements and fault tolerance by preservation of adaptivity are needed. This sub-project works additionally on the technical basics, methods and reduction of visual analysis of adaptive systems.

BIOCOMBUST is an interdisciplinary European research project, which is funded through the INTERREG IV program and involves partners from France, Switzerland and Germany. The researchers examine both the particulate emissions and the residual ashes generated during biomass combustion. The focus is on selected types of solid biomass combustibles, including wood chips, pellets, wood logs, and miscanthus (a grass grown for energy purposes). The main emphasis of the project is on the impact of biomass combustion on air quality and the associated effects on human health, but also on the potential use of the fly ash as clinker substitute in cement production.

Solar modules of the latest state of the art, such as glass-glass modules, are being studied with respect to their energy yield and ageing behavior under real operation conditions. Besides, different types of converters will be compared , amongst others, with regard to efficiency. Research will also focus on how the angle of inclination and direction of the modules influences the production of solar power. The objective is to develop regenerative energy systems of increased energy efficiency and longer service life of up to 30 years.

The cooperation project ZeBiCa2 “cell-free biomineralization of calcium carbonate: A path to in-vitro synthesis of highly structured composite materials” explores how the process of coccolith formation in the model organism Emiliania huxleyi can be transferred to cell-independent systems. To achieve this objective, it is important to understand in-vivo biomineralization in the first place, thus identifying all important actuators involved in the process. On this account it is a first goal to develop an optimized photo-bioprocess focusing on coccolith-production, growth kinetics and energy balance. The bioprocess will be established in plate-reactors. Those are model photo-bioreactors of 200-1000 ml volume, which support an environment for controlled cultivation. Using modern omics-technology (metabolome and transcriptome analysis) will allow for detailed investigation of coccolith formation within the cell. The subsequent development of a multi-stage downstream strategy will facilitate the separation of complete, intact coccoliths, available for particle-technological characterization and future applications.

The European public sphere is a communicative space where EU politic, polity and policy issues are discussed. Generally, it is assumed that the mass media are the most important forum of the public sphere in today’s society. This project reviews different models of the public sphere that have formerly been developed in the context of the nation state and outlines their normative expectations concerning the representation of citizens. The conceptual results of this part of the analysis are then linked to the notion of a European, or more precisely, EU public sphere. Next, based on this conception, a quantitative empirical analysis of the EU news coverage from the 27 EU member states is carried out. The actual representation of citizens in the European public sphere is examined. Overall, the project aims to assess which normative model of the public sphere does correspond best with the empirical representation of EU citizens in the European public sphere. Furthermore, it is analysed whether the advancement of the political integration of the EU has led to an increase in media attention on EU citizens. Finally, independently from the models if the public sphere, the relationship of EU citizens to the European integration, as reflected in the public space, is assessed.

In the research field financial communication, we analyze how media coverage of financial issues affects emotions, financial judgments, and investment decisions of individuals. In addition, we examine how mass media cover financial issues, e.g., how prominently these issues are covered, whether such stories are emotionalized, or how such stories diffuse in the media system. Here, the question is what newspapers or programs are opinion leaders and which media are followers. Finally, we are interested in the macro-level effects, i.e., the effects of the media coverage on stock prices or market volatility.

LTE Advanced is the name under which the mobile communication standard LTE is now being enhanced. LTE Advanced is intended to make the mobile Internet even faster and bring broadband to all those places where it's needed. Fraunhofer HHI first ran the new mobile wireless technology in a field trial in November 2007. In the Berliner LTE Advanced Testbed one of the issues scientists investigate is how to combine LTE frequencies at 800 MHz with other frequencies (1,8/2,1/2,6 GHz). Other research points include increasing the number of antennae to support more users and the use of relays or picocells to give better connectivity to users in remote places or buildings. This opens the way to the flexible adjustment of the number of cell sites in line with actual user density. LTE Advanced will play a decisive role in the realization of Stage 2 of the Federal Government's Broadband Strategy whereby 75 percent of all households in Germany should have 50MBit/s Internet connectivity by the year 2014.

Foods that spoil easily require innovative packaging systems to guarantee their quality and shelf-life. The development of modified packaging systems, for example with effective barrier properties and active functions, is one of the main areas of research of the Fraunhofer Project Center. These optimizations must take into account the tropical climate and longer transport routes for export products. A further key activity is the development of sustainable packaging systems. The research work includes aspects such as how renewable materials can be utilized for the manufacture of packaging and/or how the material properties of packaging systems can be improved by using renewable raw materials, for example the use of proteins as a coating on plastic and paper.

Featuring Lauren Newton and Maria Jonas & Ars Choralis Coeln. The Klangwerkstatt (Sound Workshop) at KOLUMBA has become a staple for both the Ars Choralis Coeln and Kolumba. Now in our 5th year, we are striking out along a new path by inviting the vocalist Lauren Newton, a master of improvisation. With her, we will be working up a performance in which we freely improvise – taking advantage, of course, of the museum’s special spaces and its works of art. Lauren Newton describes her work as follows: “Free improvisation means being close to your own creativity, and reacting to the moment. It means overcoming your inhibitions for making daring sounds, listening to the other musicians, and directly returning the musical balls that have been thrown to you. It comprises exercises in perception and the creative treatment of time, tones, sounds, melodies, rhythm, language, etc. Body and voice training, breathing, listening, and reaction exercises may be directly incorporated into free improvisations – integrated sounds, melodies, language, and unexpected things all turned into a musical process. An important goal is increasing your ability to make decisions in the process of improvisations.” With the participants, Lauren Newton works on extended voice techniques far beyond the singing of melodies. The spectrum of the voice is easier attained, or respectively, perceived, in free improvisation, and each vocalist will thus realize endless possibilities for making individual, fascinating music. Everything is probed: The sounds of individuals and groups, pure tones, noises, melodies, language, rhythm, as well as unexpected things in the musical process. Unconventional musical working methods improve one’s own perception, bringing surprising results to light. The music takes on a deeper meaning for one’s self and for the listeners. Guided by the musical moment, creativity is unleashed, and we discover the world of the human voice! Based on the kind of modal voice training Ars Choralis Coeln does, characterized by overtones and modal patterns of meanwhile different cultures (Gregorian, Indian Dhrupad, Hebrew Scales), together with Lauren Newton we will approach an even freer musical procedure – first in a three-day workshop in the Rochuskirche Church (Cologne-Bickendorf) and culminating on the last day in a performance at KOLUMBA. These performances over a long duration (ca. 4 hours) in spaces that do not dispose over concert-seating have proven themselves tried and true

Featuring Lauren Newton and Maria Jonas & Ars Choralis Coeln. The Klangwerkstatt (Sound Workshop) at KOLUMBA has become a staple for both the Ars Choralis Coeln and Kolumba. Now in our 5th year, we are striking out along a new path by inviting the vocalist Lauren Newton, a master of improvisation. With her, we will be working up a performance in which we freely improvise – taking advantage, of course, of the museum’s special spaces and its works of art. Lauren Newton describes her work as follows: “Free improvisation means being close to your own creativity, and reacting to the moment. It means overcoming your inhibitions for making daring sounds, listening to the other musicians, and directly returning the musical balls that have been thrown to you. It comprises exercises in perception and the creative treatment of time, tones, sounds, melodies, rhythm, language, etc. Body and voice training, breathing, listening, and reaction exercises may be directly incorporated into free improvisations – integrated sounds, melodies, language, and unexpected things all turned into a musical process. An important goal is increasing your ability to make decisions in the process of improvisations.” With the participants, Lauren Newton works on extended voice techniques far beyond the singing of melodies.
