Dr. Adjaye will succeed Prof. Peter Wernet, who was, until quite recently, the Director of the ITZ. Up until now, the primary tasks of the Institute have been the set up and development of stem cell transplantations from bone marrow and/or umbilical cord blood. Now this area will be extended to include research on iPS cells. “I start in May with a team of ten people”, says Dr. Adjaye. Up until now, his research interests have included, among other things, the development of human disease models in a cell culture dish, where he has concentrated mainly on a particular disease of the liver – referred to in vernacular as “Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) ” or steatosis. Causes of the disease is the increased prevalence of obesity, resulting in insulin resistance and excess fat accumulation in the liver, culminating in cirrhosis with liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma. This disease is now acknowledged to be the most common liver problem in the Western world.
