Nitrogen is an essential component of amino acids and hence of all proteins. However, plants are unable to directly use atmospheric gaseous nitrogen as it is present as almost inert nitrogen (N2). Synthetic fertilizer must therefore be applied to fields where potatoes, soy and maize are grown in order to provide the crops with nitrogen in the form of nitrate salts. Plants supplied with adequate nitrogen grow rapidly and produce large amounts of green foliage, seeds and fruit. Poorer countries in Africa, for example, cannot afford to buy the expensive fertilizer whereas richer European countries, for example, usually apply too much fertilizer, which leads to environmental pollution. “The question is whether it might be possible to manipulate plants in such a way as to make them able to convert atmospheric nitrogen into a biologically usable form themselves so that they will cease to be dependent on the application of synthetic fertilizer,” said Prof. Dr. Oliver Einsle from the Institute for Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Freiburg. “This might be possible if we had in-depth knowledge about the biochemistry of bacteria that are part of the atmospheric nitrogen cycle.”

The so-called US twin deficit, i.e. the combination of a significant fiscal deficit and a current account deficit, is often seen as a risk factor for the USD. Yet the evidence is mixed. During the economic boom under US President Reagan that started in 1982, a worsening twin deficit coincided with a substantial strengthening of the USD. In all other instances, the USD weakened. This ambiguity results from the fact that rising fiscal deficits, often the main driver of a deteriorating external balance, boost growth and real interest rates. The latter are generally considered to bolster a currency. If a central bank raises interest rates to offset stronger growth and inflation risks, real interest rates are further boosted. This occurred in the early 1980s when the US Fed continued to pursue a tough anti-inflationary policy just as the Reagan tax cuts came into effect. The combination of expansionary fiscal policy and restrictive monetary policy boosted real interest rates and the USD.

Astrid B. Müller: ‘I hope that with the excursus we are able to show how important the ‘manual work’ and brain work – or the ‘invisible work’ if you prefer – is. Digitisation is often associated with very technical ideas and concepts, and of course it is those things. With the excursus we want to show that quite apart from the highly technical aspects there’s a huge amount of work to do behind the scenes, as it were, ..work that isn’t apparent from the cultural stuff that’s been made accessible. With the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek we have a central portal in the making that is the platform for presenting the digitised cultural material from German cultural and scientific institutions. And this ‘invisible’ but hugely important work is being done in the network and with all areas of culture for that very purpose – and that’s another important aspect of its work. And the invisible work then has to be sorted out technically and implemented…
