Die Europäische Union hat beschlossen, das Preisgeld in Höhe von 930 000 Euro auf zwei Millionen Euro aufzustocken und Kindern zugute kommen zu lassen, denen es verwehrt ist, in Frieden aufzuwachsen. Die Gesamtsumme wird vier Projekten zur Verfügung gestellt, die Kindern in Kriegs- und Krisenregionen grundlegende Bildung ermöglichen.

Luc Van den Brande erklärte: "Da die lokalen und regionalen Gebietskörperschaften zu den Hauptempfängern von EU-Finanzmitteln gehören und einen beträchtlichen Teil ihrer Haushaltsmittel für Projekte veranschlagen müssen, die von der EU kofinanziert werden, hat der AdR ein berechtigtes Interesse daran, enger in die interinstitutionellen jährlichen Haushaltsverfahren eingebunden zu werden. Dies gilt insbesondere für die Haushaltslinien, deren Mittel ihnen zugute kommen, beispielsweise die Strukturfonds, die Gemeinsame Agrarpolitik, Jugendprogramme oder außenpolitische Instrumente. Außerdem würde dies auch mit dem Grundsatz der verantwortungsvollen Regierungsführung im Einklang stehen."

Van den Brande also explained that: "Since regional and local authorities are among the main beneficiaries of EU funds, and they need to earmark significant parts of their budgets for the EU financed projects, there is a legitimate need for the CoR to become more involved in the EU's inter-institutional annual budget procedures. This is particularly the case for the budget headings which are available to them, such as Structural Funds, Common Agricultural Policy, youth programmes or foreign policy instruments. Furthermore, this would be consistent with the principle of good governance".

Rather, the team of Audacity lead developers will spend the money on items and services that benefit the project as a whole. Money that comes in to the project helps us pay for bandwidth and web hosting, development tools, and audio hardware. In the past we used funds from donations to purchase the Audacity trademark and to subsidize travel costs for Audacity developers to meet for a hackathon, and we plan to do more of these. Our long-term goal is to bring in enough money to hire a full-time developer who could devote all of his/her time to the project and take over some of the administrative, maintenance and release tasks, freeing volunteers to spend more time on code.

‘Liverpool in Work’ is a new initiative to encourage new businesses and to get thousands of unemployed people into jobs over the next two years. The city will spend GBP 4.4 million (EUR 5 million) on the project – half from the ESF – and hopes to benefit 4 000 job-seekers from the most deprived communities by 2013. The project will also manage a ‘neighbourhood business start-up’ scheme to encourage people to start their own companies – aiming at 650 new enterprises. The initiative is led by business experts with strong links to education and training organisations.
