L'Union européenne a reconnu la fonction symbolique et pluridisciplinaire du langage et de la culture dans l'unification politique de l'Europe. Les dirigeants de l'Union ont dû ainsi faire état des conflits créés par le monolinguisme et le plurilinguisme, qui sont tous deux des aspects de la linguistique de contact. Quel est le rôle d'un plurilinguisme nouveau dans le cadre des conflits linguistiques? Existe-t-il une politique linguistique qui tient compte de l'existence de plus de 50 langues européennes, dont la plupart des langues minoritaires, "moins répandues", régionales ? En vue d'un nouveau plurilinguisme la situation linguistique des minorités est examinée dans un contexte qui demande un aménagement linguistique européen concerté des Etats-membres de l'U.E.
