Europe Day held on 9 May every year celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historical 'Schuman declaration'. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable.

As part of the millennium (year 2000) celebrations in Ireland, over 1500 acres of native woodland were designated as "People's Millennium Forests". This native woodland (divided into 16 forests around the country) was dedicated forever to the people of Ireland. The forests include newly planted areas that have been using native Irish seed. The 16 forests also include the restoration of native woodlands that have been in existence for 200 or more years.

The involvement of professional composers and musicians with schools, through various schemes, can create a considerable catalyst for a synthesis of composing and performing skills with creative stimuli. The experience of hearing a professional musician or ensemble perform either the child's music or music from other sources can change the life of a young composer, and the opportunity to sing or play alongside such musicians can greatly influence the young performer. The interest generated among children, parents and teachers by such occasions is inestimable.

Traditionally, actions are considered more important than just words. But what else can you do when you would like to promise something than recite the sentence I promise? And it's enough for a priest to say: I now pronounce you husband and wife to change your life forever. So there are some speech acts – as the linguist John L. Austin discovered that are performed by words. If some basic conditions (called felicity conditions) are fulfilled then the words pronounced perform the acts described. We can declare people married (if we have the appropriate legal status) as well as promise, threaten and hurt somebody by means of words.

POBAL gave Irish medium schools and A level students all over the north a unique chance to work with recognised writers and actors in a series of storytelling and literature workshops. Among the artists taking part was Fermanagh’s renowned novelist Séamas Mac Annaidh. Séamas ran workshops in 12 primary schools based on his travel experiences and his life as a writer and a journalist, using this experience to help pupils develop their story telling and creative writing skills. He believes that ‘Storytelling is an important tool in educational and social development. We spend our lives telling and listening to stories. Before the coming of computers and television we had stories and we will still have stories when computers and television are gone. I get great enjoyment out of storytelling. I pick up stories on my travels and pass them on as i go.’
