The Inspection Services (formerly operated by NERA) monitor employment conditions to ensure the compliance and enforcement of employment rights legislation. They also carry out inspections and gather information in relation to other employment laws. For example, employees or interested parties may ask for an inspection in relation to the protection of young people in employment. You can read more in our document on employment rights legislation inspection and compliance.

Revenue actively works with the Department of Social and Family Affairs (DSFA) and the National Employment Rights Authority (NERA) to combat tax and social welfare fraud and to monitor employment rights compliance through Joint Investigation Units (JIUs). Apart from the large annual central data exchanges, information is shared on individual cases daily between the three areas. In 2009, Revenue JIU officers carried out over 5,500 interventions, of which 1,572 were outdoor operations. 22% of the outdoor operations were with DSFA and/or NERA. The outcomes for Revenue included registering over 500 new cases, re-classifying a further 442 and collecting €2.7 million.
