Idir Lúibíní is a collection of essays on reading and literacy among Irish speakers with special reference to the Gaeltachtaí and asks why the majority of Irish speakers never buy or read Irish books. The book covers Irish teenage fiction, reading trends among Irish speakers, the marketing of Irish books, Irish language publishing, difficulties for Irish language writers, literacy problems among Irish speakers, and the implications of the emergence of 'Creole' in cities on the written tongue and how publishing companies and Irish literature in general can respond to such trends. Contributors to the book include Ros na Rún actor and writer Joe Steve Ó neachtain, Professor Dónall P.Ó Baoill of Queen's University Belfast, and Máire Denver of Eagraíocht na scoileanna Gaeltachta. The essays are based on lectures given at a symposium on reading in Irish, organised by the editor in 2002. Róisín Ní Mhianáin, a postgraduate research student with Fiontar, DCU is employed as senior literary and music editor with Galway-based publishing company Cló Iar-Chonnachta since 1999. Her edited works include the recently published authorised biography of President Mary MacAleese.
