Erudite, magnanimous and extraordinarily gifted at human relations, Peter Paul Rubens is recognised as having begun Baroque painting in Europe. With his spectacular and seductive paintings, possessing the grandeur of myth and the solar luminosity of his portraits, he had no difficulties in attracting admirers from the courts of the continent, garnering important commissions far and wide. Meanwhile, his contemporary Rembrandt van Rijn was far different: audacious, stubborn and independent, he followed his own highly individual path, which brought him to elaborate a whole new artistic language, comprised of stark contrasts of light and dark and emotional profundity. Success came to him as well, but without compromises and he managed to remain firmly anchored between Amsterdam and his native town of Leiden. At the National Gallery, an intriguing exhibition offers a face to face meeting between the two giants of the Golden Century of Dutch painting, who are also among the best represented in the collection of the museum. A significant selection of works allow the visitor to admire the points of contact and departure between the two masters that, like two faces of the same coin, together, offer an incredible view of the richness and depth of the Baroque period.
