The Royal Commission has for some years been carrying a project to create a register of chapels across Wales, and with the help of many volunteers and Capel, the Welsh Chapels Heritage Society, has collected information of some 6400 buildings. This work is ongoing and recent photography includes high quality colour images as well as recording using a gigapixel camera to create high resolution virtual tours of selected chapels. Before Dylan Roberts joined the Royal Commission’s graphics and photography branch in the 1960s, he used his considerable artistic talents to make sketches and drawings of many industrial and other structures in his native south Wales. These photos from the Seventies show how he was able to transfer this artistic ability to photography, capturing much of the fast-disappearing post-industrial sites from all parts of Wales in hundreds of unique shots. A selection of these are shown here.

The Royal Commission’s collections reflect the long, complex and diverse associations between the Welsh people and seafaring. Before the coming of the railways in the nineteenth century, the movement of people, raw materials, and manufactured goods depended heavily on ships of all types. The collection celebrates the richness of archaeological sites and structures that make up our ‘sea heritage’, which the Royal Commission researches and records to ensure they are valued and safeguarded.
