Outre de tels cadeaux de bienvenue, des gravures et des peintures européennes arrivèrent aussi en Inde par les voies commerciales et furent accueillies avec enthousiasme par les artistes locaux.

While they are best known for their grandiose architecture such as the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort in Agra, the Mughal emperors in India also patronised many other areas of the arts. The studio for illuminated manuscripts established under Emperor Akbar (who reigned from 1556 to 1605) employed well over a hundred painters.

Februar 2016 die Ausstellung «Akbars goldendes Erbe - Malerei für die Kaiser Indiens» mit einer umfangreichen Dauerleihgabe an Mogulmalerei zu sehen. Die Pigmentmalerei auf Papier, oftmals mit Gold verziert, gehört zu den grossen künstlerischen Errungenschaften unter den Mogulherrschern.
