The Fourth Ruya Lab was a day-long seminar about printing, editioning and exhibiting photography for the international art market. The workshop took place ahead of ‘Calling Calouste’ an exhibition of new Iraqi photography commissioned by Ruya, which opens on October 1 2016 at the Gulbenkian Building in Baghdad. Six of the eight photographers participating in the exhibition attended this preliminary workshop in Baghdad.

The conversation with Mr. Robert Bissett, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Canada in Iraq began in June 2015, when we talked about the absence of an art market in Baghdad, in which local artists can benefit financially from their work. The large international community living in Baghdad’s International Zone seemed like a natural audience for these artists. And yet despite living in Baghdad, they’ve have had little access to the city’s artistic community, due to security measures that are put in place by embassies and international organisations. Similarly, artists in Baghdad and Iraq have been mostly unable to show their work to an international audience that lives almost on their doorstep.

Hosting an exhibition inside the International Zone has not been easy, and would not have been possible without the help and support of the Directorate of Cultural Relations at the Ministry of Culture. Access to the area is very restricted and very few residents of Baghdad are allowed inside. We discovered that the procedure for bringing art works into the International Zone was just as time consuming and extensive as bringing in Iraqi artists.

The artists were selected by Ruya, the Embassy of Canada and the Ministry of Culture. Ruya’s own selection was of artists that we have been working with and supporting, both in Baghdad, Kirkuk and Sulaimaniya, for many years. We believe that these artists work in a way that is reflective, personal and independent of the doctrinal approach to the fine arts that is prevalent among the country’s art schools.

In February 2016, the Belgian-born artist Francis Alÿs undertook a trip to Iraq facilitated by the Ruya Foundation in which he gave a workshop to artists in Baghdad, and visited refugee camps in the north of the country. He followed this with an extraordinary visit in November 2016 to the Mosul front line in the company of a Kurdish battalion, during the Liberation of Mosul offensive. A new installation based on his experiences in Mosul was unveiled at the Iraq Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale.
