Story depicts a man who returns to his native land after 20-year absence with a considerable amount of money and decides to privatize a madhouse. What is that? A rich man’s whim? Philanthropy? It turns out that the man suffers from an incurable decease and almost a year is left for him to live, as the doctors predict. So he decides to do something good for the most desperate and unhappy people, to create a “paradise” for them. He wants to cure their souls with love and luck, to help them get out of the unsociable circle. Among his patients is a man who draws pictures on the walls of his ward. The hero organizes an exhibition for him, which enjoys great success, and the man imagines himself to be an outstanding painter. For a girl, who had lost her father, brother and lover during the hard first years of Independence, he substitutes all of them by turns. For a patient, who fancied himself a president, the man organizes a pre-election campaign. The character really turns the madhouse into a paradise of realized dreams. However, it all ends after those who want to taste the joy of the “paradise” and destroy it, attack it. The character dies accidentally during the attack and leaves behind him the legend...
