I want to further my achievements in the field of fashion design. Therefore, I will study for one year in England as a scholarship student. Meanwhile, I will take initiatives to create my own brand. 19 yaşında evlenen ve dördüncü çocuğunu doğururken hayatını kaybeden Mehriye Dinç’in gelinliğini yıllardır büyük bir özenle sakladığını belirten torunu Mehriye Başyiğit, “Annem, anneannemden kalan bu çok değerli hatırayı ismini taşıdığım için bana emanet etmişti. Bakmaya bile kıyamadığım, bizim için çok büyük manevi değeri olan bir gelinlik. Mübadele ile Türkiye’ye gelen anneannem 28 yaşında vefat ettiği için kendisini hiç tanıyamadım. Ancak bana anneannemin ismini verdiler. Bu gelinliği de yıllardır sandığımda yıpranmaması için özel kumaşların içinde saklıyorum. 35 yıldır ilk kez sandıktan çıkardık” dedi.

The ancient wedding dress decorated with handicrafts on ping silk fabric will be protected in the exhibition archive of the Department of Fashion Design. The granddaughter Mehriye Başyiğit kept the wedding dress of Mehriye Dinç, who was married in 19 years old and passed away while giving birth to her fourth child. She said, “My mother gave this very precious wedding dress of my grandmother to me, since I carried her name. My grandmother passed away when she was 28, so I could not have the chance to meet her. But they named me after my grandmother. I have been keeping this dress for years in special fabrics not to cause it wear off. I took out it from the chest for the first time in 35 years.”

Her tasarımın bir hikayesi olduğunun öğretildiğini, bunun değerini iş yaşamında daha iyi kavradığına işaret eden Karadana, “Tasarımın bir sistem olduğu ve her şeyin bir mantığı bulunduğu öğretildi. Kişi hayal gücünü kullanarak tasarım yapabilir ama bunun da sistematiğinin öğrenilmesi gerekir. İEÜ Moda ve Tekstil Tasarımı Bölümü bana bunları öğretti. İş yaşamıma en büyük etki dikişi çok iyi öğrenmem oldu. Dikiş, bu işin mutfağıdır. Dikişi öğrenmeseydim tasarımlarım hayat bulmazdı” dedi.

Gözde Karadana, who stated that the education she received at IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design had great contributions to her career, indicated that the design of showcasing was the most significant factor for a store. She also said she was taught that each design had a story, and she appreciated the meaning of that much better in her work life. Karadana said, “We were taught that design was a system and everything had a rationale. A person can make a design by using imagination but the systematics for that should be learned first. IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design taught me all of those. The biggest contribution to my career was that I learned how to sew very well. Sewing is the basis of this job. If I have not learned how to sew, my designs would not have come to life.”

2014 Fransa En İyi Aşçı Ödüllü Joseph Viola da, öğrencilerle çok güzel yemekler yaptıklarını belirterek, “İlk geldiğimde beni misafirperverlikle karşıladınız. Bu seferki gelişimde bana ünlü pastacı ve tatlıcı Sebastian Bouillet eşlik etti. Lyon’da 5 ve Tokyo’da da 2 mağazası var. Geçen sene başladığımız çalışmalarımızda başarıya ulaştık. İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi öğrencileri bizim restoranlarımızda staj yapıyor. 2 yıl önce 2, geçen yıl 10 öğrenci geldi. Fransız şefler olarak yabancı öğrencileri restoranlarımızda ağırlamak ve bildiklerimizi onlara aktarmak bizim için çok önemli. 2015 Haziran ayında 23 öğrenci bize katılacak” dedi.

This time, the famous cake and chocolate chef Sebastian Bouillet accompanied me. He owns 5 stores in Lyon and 2 in Tokyo. We’ve reached success in our studies we started last year. Students of Izmir University of Economics are performing their internships at our restaurants. 2 students came 2 years ago, and 10 last year. It is very important to host foreign students in our restaurants and share our experience with them as French chefs. 23 students will be joining us in June of 2015.”

Haseki stated that the medium of instruction being English had been a great advantage for him in establishing communication, and that he got in touch with many important contacts in Australia, America, and Europe and asked questions about stuff he didn’t get. “I was very interested in cinema during my undergraduate study. I always wondered how a movie was made. I got in touch with best producers and people in this line of business. When I had questions, I messaged them, got their advice. I said ‘I am having problem with this, can you help me’. And they got back to me and helped me a lot,” said Haseki.

Canbulat said that he re-interpreted the forgotten recipes thus making his guests capture the beautiful tastes from the past. He reported that the word “Levan (levain)” meant yeast from a bread in addition to meaning new generation. Canbulat reported that guests were welcome in his kitchen where they can be a part of all the processes. He said that they took a step towards world cuisine with internationally recognized chefs at Izmir University of Economics. “We try to make changes without harming the essence of traditional flavors. The biggest contribution of the education I received at the University is the vision it gave me. I was able to realize my “Lokanta Levan” project with this vision and entrepreneurship. And living in Urla helps getting seasonal fresh produce and meat. I am serving the products I purchased from local producers with traditional methods. My guests saying that they are able to taste the old and familiar flavors that are dying out, which is a proof that I am on the right track,” said Canbulat.

Asuman Dabak was the guest speaker for the 1st Rabarba Theater Festival hosted by Izmir University of Economics which brought theater groups of IUE, Dokuz Eylül University School of Medicine, and Physical Therapy, Ege University School of Medicine, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Yaşar, Izmir, and Kâtip Çelebi Universities together. In her conversation with the students Dabak indicated that Haldun Dormen described opening a theater hall as madness. “This was my dream, and I’m glad I made it come true. I took a break from Asuman Dabak Theater for 2 years. Now I am looking for a place in Izmir. Help me find it. If I can find a suitable place, Asuman Dabak Acting School will be at your service as of September. I am interested in old Izmir houses with 2-3 floors,” stated Dabak.

Yurttaş pointed that they did not use any hydrogenated oils, margarines, whipped cream powders, and cocoa in their pastries. “We use all natural, high quality ingredients in our pastries and cookies. Customer satisfaction is very important for us. People may come to the store out of necessity for one time but if they are satisfied with the service, they will keep coming back. My family trusted me and the education I received, and we expanded the family business by adding breakfasts and other catering services,” said Yurttaş. He said that they worked with İŞKUR (Turkish Labor Agency) supported Expert Pastry Chefs Association, and they employed youth who completed the training courses provided by the Association. Yurttaş said that they have total of 55 working for them, and sometimes they ran short of staff ran in meeting customer demands. Yurttaş indicated that his education made him realize kitchen meant not only cooking but running and managing it at the same time, and he wanted to open up more stores including in Izmir after he graduated.

“Tercih döneminde İzmir'deki belli başlı okulları ziyaret ettim ve görüşmelerde bulundum. İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi'ndeki ziyaretimde birkaç ay sonra Temel Tasarım dersini alacağım Tuğyan Aytaç Dural ile görüşmem benim tercihime yön verdi. Geçen 4 yıl, benim hayatımın bir dönüm noktasını teşkil ediyor. Tasarım bir meslekten öte bir hayat şekli. Bu nedenle sadece yeni bir meslek edinmekle kalmadım. Yeni arkadaşlarım, hocalarım ve tasarım dolu bir çevre sunan üniversitem bana yeni bakış açıları verdi. Kendimi güncellememe imkân sağladı. Haftanın 2-3 gecesini uykusuz geçirdiğim dört yılın sonunda eğitimimi bölüm birincisi olarak tamamladım. Kızı yeni okula başlamış bir anne, bir eş ve bir tasarım öğrencisi olarak sürekli şapka değiştirdiğim bu dört yılı, ailemin desteği olmasa bu kadar başarılı bir şekilde geçiremezdim.”

“During the open days I visited some of the major schools in Izmir and got information. Meeting with Tuğyan Aytaç Dural, who would be my future instructor for the Basic Design course, guided me positively in making my choice. Those 4 years I spent were important milestones in my life. Design is more than a profession; it’s a way of life. Not only did I have a new profession, I also had new perspectives with my new friends, teachers, and a world full of design. It allowed me to update myself. I had 2-3 sleepless nights a week, but it paid off as graduating the top student of the department. I wouldn’t have done it as a mother, spouse, and a student without the support of my family.”

Acil bir ekonomiyi canlandırma paketinin devreye sokulması gerektiğini belirten Soydan ‘’Bu da en az GSMH’nın yüzde 1’i seviyesinde olmalı. Yuvarlak hesap 7 milyar dolar yapar. Dünya bunu yüzde 2 seviyesinde yapıyor. Bankacılık sektörümüz sağlam. Sıkıntımız reel sektörde ve onun yeniden canlandırılması gerekiyor. Aynı şekilde daha önce IMF ile yapılan anlaşmalarla bitme noktasına gelen Tarım sektörü de yeniden ayağa kaldırılmalı. Bana göre birçok artıları olsa da enflasyon yönetiminde Merkez Bankası ikmale kaldı. Sınıfı geçmek için daha iyi çalışmalı. Bu krizden şu ana kadar sınırlı ölçüde etkilendik. Bu etkinin büyümemesi için hem mali yönetimin hem hükümetin doğru adımları atması gerekiyor. Bunun için ekonomiyi canlandırma paketi çok önemli ve bir an önce devreye sokulmalı.’’

IUE lecturer Halit Soydan emphasized that the crisis in Turkey was less in world scale and this could be overcome by accelerating the real market. Soydan stated that an emergent package of accelerating economics had to be put into effect and said “This has to be at least 1% of GNP. It is 7 billions in round figures. The world does it in 2%. Our banking sector is sound. Our burden is in real sector and it has to be accelerated. Agriculture sector which is nearly over because of the agreements made by IMF should be stirred up. In my opinion, even though it has some positive sides, Central Bank has failed in inflation management. It has to work hard in order to pass. We are affected on a limited scale in this crisis. Both the financial management and the government should go through the proper channels in order to prevent this effect to increase. The package of accelerating economics is very important and should be put into effect immediately.”

Üniversitemiz bünyesinde kurulan Ecospace Grubu Öğrencilerine teşekkür ediyorum. Çok özverili bir çaba gösterdiler, sabaha kadar çalışarak yüksek irtifa balonunu hazırladılar. Hocalarımız, onlara danışmanlık ve denetim sağladı. Onun dışında her şeyi kendileri yaptı. Bana da bir söz verdiler. Uzaya İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi’nin uydusunu yerleştireceğiz. En fazla 2-3 yıl içinde üniversitemizin uydusunu yerleştireceğiz. Başka ülkelerin uydularıyla bilgi ve haberleri alıp göndermeyeceğiz. Kendi uydusunu üreten bir ülke olma konusunda İEÜ Havacılık ve Uzay Mühendisliği Öğrencileri ellerinden geleni yapacak.”

“They’ve done so much to protect this country at the risk of their own lives. And we, too, with our students, do everything in our power for this country in order to raise our flag higher. I would like to thank Ecospace Group Students. They have done a self-sacrificing job, worked hard ‘till morning time and prepared this high altitude balloon. Yarışmaya da Japonların metal müziğe olan ilgilerini araştırarak katıldım. Her hangi bir yerde metal müzik konseri gerçekleştiğinde ortalık dağılır ve öyle kalır. Metal müzik isyankâr ve kaostan besleniyor. Konser sonrası alan, savaş alanına dönüşür. Ancak Japonya’da konser sırasında çılgınca eğlenen insanlar, konser bitiminde etrafta bir tek çöp kırıntısı bırakmıyor. Japonların metalcisi bile ideolojik olarak yaşamıyor. Bu durum beni çok etkilemişti. Yarışmada da Japonca konuşarak sunumumu gerçekleştirdim. Bundan sonra da Japon kültürünü ve dilini öğrenmeye devam edeceğim. İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi’nde aldığım ikinci yabancı dil; Japonca, bana Uzakdoğu’nun penceresini açtı ve yeni deneyimler kazandırdı.”

“Japanese culture is very unique. I had the opportunity to study both the young generation and the traditional aspects at the workshop I attended. I searched about what Japanese people think about metal music. Usually at the end of metal concerts people have a tendency to leave trash behind, leave everything messed up. Metal music feeds on chaos and rebel. It feels like a warzone after the concert. But in Japan, people who have crazy fun at the concert clean after themselves, not leaving a piece of trash behind. Even Japanese metalists don’t live ideologically. I was very impressed with that. I delivered my presentation in Japanese at the contest. I will continue to learn Japanese culture and language. The second foreign language I took at Izmir University of Economics opened the door to Far East for me, and helped me learn new experiences.”

Özellikle bambaşka bir kültürün tasarımlarını görmek ve yeni insanlar tanımak benim için en iyi kazanç olacak. Chiba Üniversitesinde de yapacağımız projenin bir yarışma projesi olması bana ayrıca bir heyecan verdi” dedi.

One of the internees, Yasin Özesen, said that he was dreaming about an internship experience in Japan since his first day at the faculty. He said, “I believe this program will be much more than just an internship, it will have many benefits. Cengiz, who stated that she wanted to increase her publicity in Izmir by building a strong brand, said, “The time I spend with brides-to-be allows me to get to know them better and help them reveal their dreams. Therefore, I recommend they come to me at least 6 months prior to the wedding date. It is even better if we start working a year before. We go shopping for fabrics and materials together in the streets of Kemeraltı. This helps me to know them better and makes me witness their most special moments, so I can make their dreams come true.”

Vitrinimde gördüğü tasarımlarımı beğenerek gelen Kuveytli müşterim oldu. Ayrıca, Denizli, Muğla, Akhisar gibi pek çok kent ve ilçeden tasarımlarımı beğenen gelin adayları oluyor. Tasarımlarımın dikkat çekmesi yaratıcılığımı daha da arttırıyor.”

“I was taught the importance of showcasing and how to display it during my education. People reach me after seeing my showcase. I see the outcomes of unique and good quality of education I received at IUE. I even had customers from Kuwait. “Özel sektörde kendime güzel bir yer bulabilmek için çift anadal yaptım. Tasarım üzerine çalışıyorum ve herkes şaşırıyor. Hâlbuki İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi’nde aldığım eğitim sayesinde müşterilerle nasıl bir iletişim kuracağımı, kendi bütçemi nasıl ayarlayacağımı, finansmanımı, işi yönetebilmeyi biliyorum. Deniz Şenyüz whose designs drew great attention said, “I was giving some accessories I made to my friends as gifts. People wanted me to make things for them too. I began to sell things one by one. I formed a group on facebook named “Şıkıdım Design”. I wear my designs and we are making professional photograph shots. I upload these photos to facebook. There is a big interest on facebook. I receive many offers. But I make just 2 or 3 designs no matter how much offer I take.”

Haseki stated that the medium of instruction being English had been a great advantage for him in establishing communication, and that he got in touch with many important contacts in Australia, America, and Europe and asked questions about stuff he didn’t get. “I was very interested in cinema during my undergraduate study. I always wondered how a movie was made. I got in touch with best producers and people in this line of business. When I had questions, I messaged them, got their advice. I said ‘I am having problem with this, can you help me’. And they got back to me and helped me a lot,” said Haseki.

Hollanda’nın Harlem kentindeki Teylers Müzesi’nde gerçekleştirilen törende ödülünü alan Prof. Dr. Van Eck, “Ödül, her yıl farklı bir soruya aranan yanıta veriliyor. Yarışmaya, İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi bünyesinde sanatın tarihi anlamaya yönelik nasıl kullanılması gerektiğini sorguladığım makalem ile katıldım. Makalemde, yine Hollanda’nın Gouda kentinde bulanan tarihi Saint John Kilisesi’nin cam vitraylarında 1579 – 1795 yılları arasında Hollanda Cumhuriyeti’ne ilişkin yansımaları inceledim. Krallığın izlerini takip ettim. Krallığın yansımalarının camda sanata dönüşmesi bana bu ödülü getirdi” dedi.

Prof. Dr. Van Eck, who received his award at the ceremony that took place at Teylers Museum in Harlem, Holland, said, “The award goes to an answer sought for a different question each year. I attended the contest within the body of Izmir University of Economics with my article questioning how history should be used in understanding art. My article also included my studies on historical St. John’s Church, located at Gouda, Holland, and the reflections of Dutch Republic on the stained-glasses of the Church between the years of 1579 – 1795. I followed the traces of the Kingdom. Reflections of the Kingdom transforming into art on the glasses brought me this award.”

“I’ve founded IZMO Bilişim on my own. I resigned and turned my hobby into a new job. People thought I went crazy then. They told me that I left a very comfortable job and started to sell a dream. Of course, there were difficult times but I believed in what I was doing. When you hear the word entrepreneurship you think about being your own boss, flexible work hours. On the contrary, we work longer hours because you have the entire job. I started this business with no capital. I worked a lot and invested what I earned in this job again. Kafa Topu was created with a team of 4 people. It was downloaded 3 million times in Turkey alone. Developing an online game was difficult. Europe is on my list now. They already suggest 10 million Turkish Lira for Kafa Topu."
