The innovative company from Yverdon now manufactures not only customized hip implants, but also standard implants for hip and knee joints. Florent Plé, son of Jean Plé and recently appointed Deputy CEO of Symbios, draws an analogy: "It's like buying a suit: For some people, a suit straight off the rack fits like a glove, while for others the sleeves are too long, the pant legs too short, or the waist too large." But unlike buying a suit, the consequences of an ill-fitting implant are far more serious. Medical publications reporting on artificial knee joints indicate that 30 percent of individuals who undergo such an operation are dissatisfied with their prosthesis. This significant number inspired Jean and Florent Plé to think about manufacturing customized knee joints. However, the development costs were enormous. Symbios persuaded SVC Ltd. to invest, and successful clinical tests are already underway on the customized knee joints, which are due to hit the market in 2017. Nicolas Faivre, co-owner of Helvetica emphasizes: "Symbios has found the perfect niche for competing in the market alongside the US giants. The market potential is enormous, and it is highly likely that this SME will enjoy substantial growth in the future."

Entre-temps, l’entreprise innovante implantée à Yverdon fabrique non seulement des prothèses de hanche personnalisées, mais aussi des prothèses de hanche et de genou standard. Florent Plé, fils de Jean Plé et depuis peu gérant adjoint de Symbios, tente la comparaison: «C’est comme pour l’achat d’un smoking: un smoking fabriqué à la chaîne va comme un gant à certaines personnes, mais pour d’autres, les manches sont trop longues, le pantalon trop court ou la ceinture trop large». Or les conséquences d’une prothèse mal adaptée sont plus graves qu’un smoking qui ne sied pas parfaitement. D'après des études sur les genoux artificiels, 30% des personnes opérées ne sont pas satisfaites de leur prothèse. Pour Jean et Florent Plé, ces résultats sont une incitation à faire mieux et à promouvoir la fabrication de genoux artificiels sur mesure. Toutefois, les coûts liés au développement sont considérables. Symbios a pu convaincre SVC SA en tant qu’investisseur, si bien que les tests cliniques sont en cours, avec des résultats déja concluants. Les prothèses de genou sur mesure devraient être disponibles en 2017. Nicolas Faivre, co-propriétaire de Helvetica, souligne: «Symbios a trouvé la niche idéale pour exister à côté des géants américains dominant le marché. Le potentiel est énorme et il est très probable que cette PME connaisse une croissance considérable.»
