The matrons – who are trained in such skills as CPR – and drivers work for private bus companies but for nearly 50 years, the City has included an EPP in all school bus company contracts. The workers believe that the EPP is directly linked to the safety and security of New York’s children by ensuring that the most qualified, skilled and experienced school bus crews remain on the job.

Januar im Ausstand gegen den Vorschlag der Stadtverwaltung, in den neuen Verträgen für den Schulbussektor, die im September 2013 in Kraft treten sollen, auf Arbeitsschutzregelungen, die sogenannten Employee Protection Provisions (EPP), zu verzichten, was Bezahlung und Sozialleistungen gefährdet. Elterninitiativen, Gewerkschaften und andere Unterstützergruppen haben sich mit dem streikenden Busfahr- und Begleitpersonal solidarisch erklärt.

Estos trabajadores y trabajadoras están en huelga desde el 16 enero como protesta ante la amenaza que se cierne sobre sus salarios y prestaciones debido a la propuesta del ayuntamiento de no incluir las Disposiciones de Protección de los Empleados (DPE) en los nuevos contratos de los autobuses, que entrarán en vigor en septiembre de 2013. Grupos de padres y madres, sindicatos y otros simpatizantes se solidarizaron con estos choferes y vigilantes.
