Tåler ikke godt brakvand, og i havet er den begrænset til den østlige Finske Bugt, og den nordligste del af Botniske Bugt. Heltling går i stimer på åbent vand, foretrækker dybt, klart vand. Kan tåle mere eutrofisk vand, forudsat at indholdet af ilt er godt.

Distribution and habitat: Originally a fish of the large lakes of SE Finland, vendace have been transplanted for purposes of commercial exploitation throughout Finland with the exception of northernmost Lapland, although populations have been established in lake Inarinjärvi and the river Paatsjoki. Does not tolerate brackish water well and in the sea is restricted to the eastern Gulf of Finland and the northernmost Gulf of Botnia. Vendace move in shoals in open water, preferring deep, clear water. Can tolerate more eutrophic waters provided oxygen levels are good.

Undgår brakvand på grund af dets saltindhold og findes i havet kun ved ferskvandsudmundinger og i den østligste del af Finske Bugt, tæt ved Finlands østlige grænse. Opholder sig på stenbund i godt iltet vand.

Distribution and habitat: A freshwater species found throughout Finland as far north as the lower reaches of the river Kemijoki. Avoids brackish water because of its salinity and occurs in the sea only in freshwater estuaries and in the easternmost part of the Gulf of Finland close to Finland’s eastern border. Inhabits stony bottoms in well-oxygenated water. Uses its barbels to hunt for food, foraging under stones. Unable to tolerate oxygen deficiency in eutrophic lakes but copes with eutrophication better in rivers because of the higher oxygen levels.

Karusse konkurrerer ikke godt med andre arter, og i blandede bestande er antallet ofte lille. Den styrke ligger i dens mulighed for at tolerere lavt iltindhold igennem vinteren. Dette gør det muligt for den at overleve i eutrofisk vand, der gentagne gange bliver tømt for ilt.

Distribution and habitat: Crucian carp have been introduced into many waters, both intentionally and accidentally, as a bait fish. Its distribution is thus somewhat patchy. Most northerly occurrences are in Kittilä and Sodankylä in Lapland. More widespread in the nutrient-rich lakes of central and southern Finland. Also found in similarly rich bays of the Gulf of Finland and Gulf of Botnia as far north as Vaasa. Crucian carp do not compete well with other species, and in mixed fisheries its numbers are often small. Its strong point is its ability to tolerate low oxygen levels during winter. This allows it to survive in eutrophic waters repeatedly affected by oxygen depletion. It can even survive in ponds that freeze completely by burying itself in the bottom mud. It is therefore often the only species found in small nutrient-rich ponds.
