  Map Hanes Cymru: Tywyso...
Mae hanes tywysogion Deheubarth – llywodraethwyr rhan helaeth o dde-orllewin Cymru ar un adeg – yn gymysgedd ddiddorol o uchelgais, ymgiprys, codi cestyll a deffroad diwylliannol. Bu cymeriadau grymus fel y deddfwr Hywel Dda a'r Arglwydd Rhys yn sicrhau goruchafiaeth y deyrnas yn y rhanbarth am 300 mlynedd a mwy.
The story of the princes of Deheubarth – once rulers of much of south west Wales – is a fascinating mix of ambition, rivalry, castle-building and cultural awakening. Formidable characters such as law maker Hywel Dda, and the powerful Lord Rhys ensured the dynasty’s supremacy in the region for over 300 years.

The lands surrounding this fortress once belonged to Earl William fitz Osbern, one of William the Conqueror’s closest confidants. His time at Chepstow Castle in the late eleventh century marked the beginning of the conquest of south Wales by the Marcher lords.

Dolbadarn Castle and Dinefwr Castle inspired Cadw's first storytelling and literacy project in 2009. In 2010, the project moved to the castles at Caernarfon and Chepstow. The momentum continued with the children producing wonderful stories about ogres, dragons and evil wizards. In 2011, the project focused on Criccieth Castle and Tretower Court and Castle. In 2012 the project was delivered in both north Wales and south Wales, working with schools in Denbigh and Kidwelly castles, followed by Conwy and Caerphilly in 2013.

Barry Island has a key place in the social history of south Wales. This is because from the 1890s until the recent development of mass foreign tourism it was the focus of day trips to the seaside from the communities of the coalfield, and beyond. But the island is more than this. It is a distinctive part of a dock and railway town that grew up rapidly from 1884. Dock and town were designed to break the monopoly of Cardiff Docks over coal exports from south Wales. By 1913, Barry was the world’s premier coal exporting port. It was, of necessity, a new community, which attracted migrants from across the British Isles, and its cosmopolitan dockland reflected its global reach.
