In the Dutch town of Zutphen, two employment organisations, Het Plein and Aventus, have launched an initiative to tackle illiteracy and improve numeracy and IT skills. The ability to read and write is a prerequisite for success in the jobs market, as well as for social inclusion – yet those struggling to master these skills often hide their problems out of embarrassment. In 2012, Het Plein noticed that around 100 of its customers had problems with reading and writing, so its employees are now receiving special training from Aventus to identify a lack of language skills among those who come to it for help and thus to recommend training to improve these vital skills.
