The rule of thumb is that water needs to be filtered in a sequence from coarse to fine. A fine filter material would quickly clog and then reduce the water flow if used in a first stage. That’s why we prefilter first, then follow this with the biological filtering and ideally follow this with an additional fine post-filtering. That’s why oxygen deficiency can occur at night, when there are lots of plants in the aquarium. During the day your plants produce a lot of oxygen and your air pump would again expel quite a lot of CO2 through the movement on the water surface –a similar effect to shaking a bottle of cola, where CO2 also gets expelled.

Some of the results of JBL’s Australia expedition were really astonishing: Around noon the ground temperature of the red Australian sand reached a foot-scorching 63 °C!
